im personally looking at buying a bike and register with no safety and no plates - which would make it unfit, so how would make it "fit" when i decide to insure and plate it, just a safety and insurance they they will sell me plates?
can i register a bike as "fit" with a safety but no plates no insurance, its going to be stored or modified?

what are the other classes of the frame titles, branded, salvage...etc, and which can be put back into legal road service and how.
(lets assume all registered canadian bikes for now)

basically im looking at picking up a project bike (a couple actually to keep busy) 1 bobber and 1 newer SS.
really want a 2009 sportster... 07 i dont like where the ECU is and i dont want a carb'd bike... i just dont know how to tune them.

You can register at "Fit" and "Unplated". Bring in a safety and that's it. No insurance, no plates. Make the return trip when you want to put it on the road.

Stay away from "Irreparable", "Salvage", or "Rebuilt" as in Ontario it can NEVER be put back on the road - no matter what you do with it.

from the MTO website:

" ... motorcycles previously branded “salvage”, “rebuilt” or an equivalent brand will be branded “irreparable” when registered in Ontario. This means that the vehicle will never be eligible to be driven on Ontario’s roads. ... "

Nice eh?

EFI Sportsters are easy to tune. I put the Dynojet PowerVision on mine, fantastic piece of kit. Bike runs cooler, more torque and better fuel economy. Check it out.

perfect thanks. not that passing a safety on a bike is all that hard.
kinda sucks, that you cant put them back on the road with those titles (especially rebuilt)but oh well. im more concerned with the fit and unfit classifications for the time being. i just remember i bought a car once and i was going to put it in my name then put it on the road a month later because i was going on vacation and the girl at the MTO said oh you dont want it listed as unfit because then there is a big process to get it re registered... so i just went and got my safety/e-test then registered it.

i use bazzaz on my current supersport, amazing system. ive got he Z-AFM so you can read the a/f and tune it.

when i had a 2007 sportster i was looking at the Power Vision, amazing system. do you have to keep the screen hooked up all the time, or after you tune it can you take it off?
i cant believe what people are asking for their sportsters, now... i bought my 07 2yrs ago with 5000km (or 8000...i cant remember) for $5800 and it was mint. i put a lot of aftermarket parts on it, exhaust, suspension, dakota digital, dual headlights etc.. and sold it for about 7000 gave the guy a option of stock at one price or as it sits for 7000 wit all the stock parts as well...he got a killer deal...now you are lucky to find a EFI sporty for under 8 grand stock.
for what i want, i dont care if its banged up as long as there is no frame or suspension damage.

Once you're satisfied with the tune you can disconnect the PV. I leave mine attached on a RAM mount and made a custom gauge package on it that I can reference while riding. As for resale being high, that's only good if you already own one.

I saw an ad on kijiji for just the clean title. The seller had sold off the parts including the frame and thought he could get 1000$ for the piece of paper alone. How do you function like that in real life?

You can get $1000 or even more for papers alone if the bike is fairly new and there is demand for that model/year... If someone has a salvage title bike that is mechanically fine that they bought for $2500 off an auction etc, and they buy a clean title for $1000 to make it clean title. Thats a clean title bike now for $3500, although technically illegal this happens all the time.....

My friend just bought a bike for $3000 its a 2003, owner never mentioned anything about crashes or big repairs....9 out of 10 people would never notice this, but when she bought the bike for me to work on right after buying it...I noticed the VIN has been restamped....So the frame or papers at some point on this bike have been changed, is it a stolen bike?, is it a crashed salvaged bike that someone just bought clean papers for and switched it over? Was the frame damaged and just the frame replaced, Who knows....Point is this stuff happens all the time, weather people are aware of it or not

I will be checking with Kawasaki Canada to make sure the motor # in the bike she bought matches the VIN number on their records. If it does not, the seller might just have some questions to answer to the police...

Wow. Just WOW.

It was a newer bike, 2000+. Who knew......

You want a project bike but you dont want one with a carb? Carb tuning is pretty interesting and not hard at all.. So what are you looking to do in the project?

Is this going to be your first bike?

im on my 2nd street bike.
im just not a carb guy.... ive lucked out with tuning a couple over the years but really had no clue what i was dong. i like the plug and play fuel management systems. my curent bike im running a bazzaz and wideband tuner so i can plug in run diagnostics and set the a/f how i want it.

i just have a urge to buy a project bike, my current street bike is almost done so i need something else to wrench on.

Know up front though that if your bike is not legit, it will be confiscated and you'll be reimbursed absolutely squat - nice eh?

A branded bike can actually be legally registered in Ontario. It requires replacing the frame and registering it as home made or rebuilt. Also needed an afadavit certifying where the parts were sourced from. I haven't done it in a few years. From what I've heard, getting insurance coverage for one of these title is a challenge. When I did it ten years ago, I not only had no problem getting coverage, but was paying ridiculously low rates, about 20% of what the same clean title bike would have cost me. It was the only way I could afford to ride a liter bike at the time.

If you consider this route, do your research carefully. Also, be prepared to be run in circles at Service Ontario. My experience is that the staff are unfamiliar with the process and requirements and are more likely to refuse service than to figure it out.

Not sure this is still true.
There is no such title as rebuilt anymore for motorcycles, it is either clean or irrepairable.
Yes changing the frame with a clean vin # frame could fix that, but then it is classified as the new vin #.

Not sure, things could have changed. What I do know is that I was told it could not be done at 3 different mto offices when I last did this. At that time, it could.

I can't say it enough; get ideas from a forum, then do your own research.
