Hey Guys and Gals!

Good to be back on GTAM after a year or so.
I hope you are all riding safe and strong :) - I can already see some of you on the road and it makes me smile :p

Quick back story:
Started riding on ZX6-R as my first bike in '11.
Rode, enjoyed, sold it.
At that time it was insured under my dad who is no longer willing to insure it for me. He has his reasons.
Now, I am looking for something I can afford(insurance wise), which is something like Ninja 650R or SV 650
If anyone is curious - (22 y/o, 5'10, 173 - never been on insurance policy before - G2M2) - so SS again is a no-no! :lmao:+ I don't think I have skill to truly enjoy that bike. I read recently someone say riding a fast bike slow is no fun, I agree.

My Question:
I was just hoping for some advise on where I could find these bikes (Ninja 650r, SV650)? I mean Kijiji and auto trader barely even have one matching the category.

Also just out of curiosity, are there people who would go check out bikes with me? I am sure we could come up with some kind of deal, maybe even money to pay you back for time. I am mechanically-retarded, so I would like someone who could show me the ropes, tell me what a bike is really worth.

Anyway, if you have some valuable input or not, say Hi anyway :) ... would like some biker friends for this season!

G'day!

-Syed

Spring is just around the corner. Overpriced bikes will be popping up on kijii/autotrader and here any day now

BTW when you do a search on kijii or autotrader don't just focus on gta, expand your search to other places where people seem to be a little more realistic with pricing.
2-5 hour drive can easily mean 1-2K savings

There's lots out there. Maybe add the fz6r to your list of possible bikes. If you need a good dealer to go to go check out Brampton powersports and ask for Ian.

first generation CBR125R you can buy the bike and afford insurance for under $2200 total while having a low mileage bike that will last you years to build up your rating then when you find a good deal buy it and switch up insurance.

A lot more posts will be up in summer months but you got the issue of dealing with good deals selling quick and overpriced deals not being worth a second look. Another good option is to join websites specific to those makes/models for better classifieds.

Syedo, welcome back and after reading your post I can see that your much more level headed than that "other post" about which bike to get. I'm sure you will make a logical decision on whatever you decide. Good luck.

Paul - Thank you, that is a good idea. I am going to try that. Although, I remember trying that once, but It was the same. Not sure. Will give it another shot.

Ronnie- Heyaa. Thank you. I will check out Ian for sure.

XenoVibe - Thank you. Great input. While I agree it is probably a good financial choice. ZX6R has given me Bloodlust that may not be quenched by a 125 CC. Although, cbr 500 r, May re-think that :).

Sticker - Thank your sir. Encouragement feels nice :)

For the price difference and power increase look at a fz6r over the 500. You'd be silly not to

Yes, I will agree I have not looked to much into that.
It might be because the insurance company I am going through insures bikes very selectively. So I am skeptical about them insuring Fz6r. But I am going to check with them tomorrow. Hopefully they do, will open up some more choices.

Yes insurance companies are fickle. As I stated on the "other" post. A bandit 650 is classed as a sport-touring bike, the replacement GSF 650 as a sport bike. Essentially the same bike other than a side fairing.

I would also suggest the FZ6 over the FZ6r. I found the newer bike lacking (although on paper they probably spec our similarly). Also, for sure the older model is classed as sport-touring for sure so insurance is comparatively low.

Depending on your location, I'm sure there are a few of us who could offer some feedback, but there's a list of things to look for when viewing a bike. I'm sure it's here already, and someone could refer to the posting, but if not, I for one can give you "a list". I've owned or rebuilt a few over the past 15 years, all from Kijiji or Autotrader so could give you my 2 cents worth.

Heya!

Thank you so much for your wise words.
I have to look around and understand what the difference is between FZ6 and FZ6r, but by the sounds of it, one seems "sportier"..

Also, I am from Mississauga.
I would love if someone could give tips, points, or that "list" :p
Because my first bike, I thought was amazing. Later someone told me the frame was cut and it used to be a race bike or something. I am clue-less.
But trying everyday to learn more!

You're taking an excellent approach to this. Like others have said, the season is early and expect bikes to get listed soon. If there's anything in my area I'll go check it out with you.

Like this?

Might make a nice bike for around $3500. Wolfeworx here in town (London) was running a "free pick up and delivery" promo a few weeks ago. Maybe they could pick it up, give it a once over, safety, and help you load it onto something to get it back to T.O.? Nice people - I have one of my bikes there now.

"The List" off the top of my head (others please chime in).

Ownership (in their name, Brand - None) & recent MTO used vehicle package (lien free)
The Owner him/herself. A hooligan is a hooligan, a crook is a crook
The general condition of the bike (clean, well taken care of, but then a deal is a deal)
Has it been down - no probs, but reflected in price, if not stated up front walk away
Also, if you know it's been down, price out replacement parts - some parts are REALLY expensive
Maintenance records (some people though do their own maintenance)
Chain (such an easy thing to maintain, if it's all gummed up - there's your sign)
Sprocket wear
Oil level & condition
Any leaks
Tire condition or signed of a burnout
Any problems starting, any "weird" ticking etc

Have a sizable deposit in hand and take it for a spin (leaving your driver's licence and cash with owner) ensuring they are covered should you pooch the bike.

Thanks man! Yeah I guess I have to wait a bit. I want it soooon though! Cannot stand driving a cage. Its ok now, since its freezing outside, but as soon as we have + temperate.....well, you know that feeling.

@Gsus Thank you for that. That's amazing, I might actually find that guy and give him a holler :D - I love the biking community, haha. Always willing to help

@Yamamana Great list. I guess I am below your "average" rider, despite having had a bike. I can never tell if a bike has been dropped or not. I mean, if the handle is not aligned or forks are bent, its obvious. But other than cosmetic stuff, I am terrible at telling how good the machinery is.
But the general knowledge stuff is great to know.
I very much like the point about the maintenance logs. Someone who has that def. cares about his bike.

Thanks for the people that are reaching out and offering to check out bikes. I thank you very much!

1989 and older FZ600

or any sport bike before 1989...your insurance will be quite low...considered standard 25 years or older

best way to tell if a bikes been dropped is to run your hands over the mirrors and signals if not flush mounts. If you feel they're rough, its been down...

of course they could have replaced those parts but its a good place to start. Then you look at bar ends, kickstand, bottom of the forks and swing arm to see if there is any rash there.

OP

Your list is a bit old tech. The move these days for non-SS is towards more of an upright naked bike like the FZ8 or the new Yamaha triples which are motard in look.

My son when through the same evolution ....his Fz8 is way more comfortable than his SV650s was, more powerful and better suspension and was $6990 brand new.

Yamaha is busting the intermediate bikes wide open with their new models.

There are really very few places to ride a sport bike within 3 hours of GTA.

So urban warriors like the FZ8 and FZ6 that can also go distance are more and more popular.

He's in Mississauga so you might be able to talk to him - sounds near your age and is an experienced rider.

That his SV650s in front.

His riding buddy opted for the FZ6

Once more there is no insurance difference

You'll enjoy the ride down to PA far more to get real twisties and much more comfortable around town and in traffic with the more upright seating.

Go talk to him.
If you PM me your email I will send it along

@stratofortress Thank your sir, for your input. It is valued, certainly. Although, Bikes that old scare me because, like I said earlier, I am mechanically-retarded, so if anything goes wrong, I am going to have to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed.

@LoneRonin - Good tips! Will be sure to check that when I buy :)

@MacDoc - Thank you so much for a great post! Very informative and graphic
:o - Will PM you for sure.
