Hey everyone,

I was trying to find some info on here about registering and insuring a vintage motorcycle but couldn't find anything.

If you have an older bike can you register with the ministry as vintage? What about insurance for it and restrictions? Which insurance companies insure these bikes?

I've got an 1984 Honda in pristine original condition that is pretty much never ridden, except on the occassional Sunday once every month or two.

Thanks,

I have a 1978 GS550 with a 6 digit VIN as my street bike. I did nothing different at the ministry. For Insurance I had to get a safety done before they would insure it.

Insured with Wawanesa through James Insurance broker in Bowmanville

The ministry doesn't care about its age, a motorcycle is a motorcycle. The only thing i have run into is when the bike doesnt have a 17 digit V.I.N this will confuse some of the agents but if you explain it usually one of the managers will know and can correct the situation. Finding insurance can be difficult sometimes the company you do other business through will take it. A lot of times they wont, Statefarm is good about insuring the older bikes and there are a few others supposedly desjardins will do them too.

If your bike is a 1984, insure ASAP. A lot of companies, such a Primmum where I have my policies won't insure bikes over 30 years old. They will continue to insure a bike once it reaches 30 years and on. I have a 1982 bike I insured a few years ago and they continue to renew it. It's a Honda CT 70 which I probably ride and 50 kms a year, doesn't matter, a bike is a bike no matter how much I use it.

A motorcycle 30 years old or older can be registered as a "Historic Vehicle" as long as it is basically to the original specification of that make and model. Fee is $18.00/year, there is no special Historic plate available but the licence document is stamped "Historic Vehicle". Use is limited to historic vehicle events, parades, testing, demonstration for sale, etc., etc.. Classic and Vintage motorcycle insurance for limited use of 2,500 km/year is available through Aviva (Canada) insurance agents such as Dalton Timmis. Some conditions apply as to the bike (standard specification, appraisal required) and rider (30 years old or older, driving and claims history, etc.,)
