So Canadian Tire used to sell Motorcycle License plate covers.. now they dont seem to.

Anyone know where I can get one?

Just looking for a clear one that will fit Ontario plates. I have a dealer supplied one, but I dont like their name on the cover ( (is there a way to remove the screen printing?)

I believe CT got rid of them all as everyone was getting tickets for having them since they were illegal to put on your car.

Easy off, or get a black paint marker and paint over it

CT still carry the car ones, not the motorcycle ones.

Are they legal for bikes?

technically you can get a ticket for obstruction of plate.. but unless its really dark or tinted I doubt cops care. I have one on my car for 10+ years and my bike for 5 years. Never had issues with them. Even when pulled over by Law Enforcement.

You can buy plate covers from the MTO at Service Ontario!!? lol.
You cant have any film on top of your license plate as this can obstruct the cop from reading your plate. The only film you can apply above your plate are clear plastic cover/film to "protect" your plate from corrosion.

just because mto sells them that doesnt mean they are legal. Know the rules or pay the price :)

What's the charge for a plate cover, 13(2)?

Number plates, further violations
No other numbers to be exposed
13. (1) No number other than that upon the number plate furnished by the Ministry shall be exposed on any part of a motor vehicle or trailer in such a position or manner as to confuse the identity of the number plate. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 13 (1).
Number plate to be kept clean
(2) Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried. 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (7).
Obstruction prohibited
(3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5).

Just FYI. Service Ontario and the Ministry of Transportation are not the same thing.
MTO, service ontario, drive test centre. In fact, any places that would sell them even courts, stock from dealerships or police stations. I believe other than clears( to some extent), they are illegal.

Hope that settles it.

IIRC, its $85+ surcharge

Isn't that technically anything that is shiny and reflective?

What's wrong with the uncovered plate? I don't have any plate covers and all my plates are doing just fine.

if you leave you vehicle outside 24/7, the sunlight attacks the finish, bleaches the letters and starts corrosion. Not sure if plastic covers prevent any of that.

I see. So how long do I wait for that before it happens? My plates are outside 24/7 for 13 years now and they look like new. Even the bent one is doing fine.

Older plates are much better than the new plates. The cheap blue vinyl they switched to (did you know the blue letters aren't painted on? It's a hot melt vinyl film!) wasn't holding up very well to UV (causing all the faded plates you see) so when we were making them they made us "double foil" them (put them through the heat roller machine that lays the blue vinyl, twice).

I have personal plates, so I like to keep them protected a bit.

You can get ticketed for faded plates too. It's your responsibility to replace damaged plates.
