Not to glorify death or anything, but videos like these remind us how dangerous racing motorcycles can be. WSBK changed many rules this year to ensure that all bikes race from start to finish despite conditions. This death can be attributed to that rule. Clearly the race should have been red-flagged as visibility was zero. The liter bike race was just as dangerous, and rather bizarre:

This happened over a month and a half ago and was already discussed in the track forum.

Firstly, this was World superSPORT. Secondly, they were already on full wet tires so the new rules had no affect on his death. Similar crashes have happened in dry races and resulted in fatalities.

It is a shame that it happened, but racing motorcycles is dangerous. There was no glaring safety faults committed imo. If they thought it was unsafe to ride in, they would not have run the race. They called off the Monza race last year after the riders said it was too dangerous.

Thats terrible, my condolences to him...

Race direction is WSBK has been pretty terrible as of late. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but check out the past weekend's races at the nurburgring.

That said, WSS can be a total mess sometimes. I remember this year's race at Monza was Red flagged 3 times due to pileups, and that was a dry race. In the wet, things get really nasty.

Nurburgring has always had issues.

Look for the oil on corner one fiasco from a few years ago.

Yeah, I've heard some stories. That said, this one had a pretty serious facepalm moment.

That was crap marshalling, they clearly had oil on the track and they didn't fly the red-yellow flag.

I do not understand why they race in the wet. It's just dangerous.

Because it's an organized event. To cancel you might refund thousands of admissions, throw out thousands of dollars of vendor foods, pay staff to go home, forfeit televised income etc. Disappointed fans may not return next time. In other words, money.
Is it worth a human life? Not in my mind but the real world has risks.
I expected traction issues but never considered the poor visibilty from tire spray. Both played a part.
That said, if it wasn't raining they would have likely been going faster and the same thing might have happened.

You would find it easier to understand if you had the focus and drive that every rider on that grid has. Rain is just another condition to be managed, like worn tires or poor setup. I personally love racing in the rain and would always vote to race.

It's also worth noting that the rider was actually excited about racing in the wet. His father had talked to him just before the race and he felt that he could run further up the field in the wet conditions. Riding in the wet is often about risk management, and for guys with a real chance of winning a championship, they may think twice about risking too much for only a few more points. Guys that run at the back have little to lose by having a wipeout while pushing for the front. Obviously getting run over is not something that people plan for.

Because its not NASCAR.

...and these are not cars.
I appreciate the skill level to race in the rain, but often they can't see where they are going in the spray, painted surfaces turn to ice, and you don't slow at all if you fall.
People get off watching fatalities in racing -just look at all the Youtube vids of this death.

Parachute jumping is dangerous. Without a parachute is just stupid.

As for money...somehow Golf, Baseball, the Indy 500 and NASCAR survive.

Don't the riders have some kind of responsibility for their own safety, too? If it's too slippery/poor visibility you slow down just like on the road. Then the craziest guy wins! I always figured most of racing is trusting the machine, anyway, so usually the guy crazy enough to really push the limits will be the one in first.

As a disclaimer, I don't usually watch racing events.
