Chain Lube suggestions for a long trip

I prefer spray chain wax, stays drier.

Every time I use this stuff it always leaks. I'm gonna try the multi purpose (blue can) see if it's any better.

Try Motul lube...its the stickiest stuff I've ever used and has the least fling and greasy residue. The blue can which is the new formula won't be any better...

Wow some really good product recommendations ill have to try a few products out for sure before, during and after this trip.

That's what I would go with if I had a chain. Keeps the chain lubed and you basically leave it alone, sounds much easier for when on a trip.

Lots of reviews I've read says it makes a huge mess they all said there is lots of fling since they need to use a light oil that will drip out onto your chain as you're riding and since it applies while you're riding it doesn't have time to dry at all before flinging off.

A bike is going to get dirty on a trip no matter what. I guess it depends on what the rider finds acceptable. If I had a chain, I would go with that as the simplicity of it, and taking away one step of maintenance would be worth it to me. Thats just me though, and really, I never want to buy a bike with a chain again, shaft or belt for me.

The idea of a oiler is just not appealing to me, though I understand the ease of use. To me it is just one more thing that can go wrong. I guess I am just old fashioned.

As long as you have a centre stand, chain maintenance is pretty easy. Just lube at the end of each day and you'll be fine.

I think you might have missed the overall topic for this thread, I am not asking how or when to lube my chain I am asking what people used or recommend using for a high milage road trip. But you do bring up one small valid point, I don't have a center stand like many bikes, so to help ease the daily chain maintenance I am bring this. it allows me to service all the bikes coming on the trip with ease. picked it up here: http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/Motorcycle/500-lb-Motorcycle-Wheel-Cleaning-Stand/8245409.p

I ride daily. Commute, trips, Sunday rides. I ride in rain, snow and salt plus gravel roads.

The last chain I replaced had 74,845 km on it and probably still had life left on it but I was going on a fair sized trip so didn't want to push it. That was on my 2006 V-Strom.

In 2011 I did 57,000 km on my 2006. There were two fairly big trips.. 5,200 km to the East Coast and 10,300 km to Grand Canyon, Death Valley etc.

The current chain on my 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650 has 52,000 km on it (original OEM chain) and was adjusted for the first time a few days ago, (Front Sprocket is worn and wil be replaced shortly.) I NEVER clean the chain as it does nothing of any practical use at all and, if brushes are used can damage the O-Rings. I take care of my chain the same way on the road as I do at home. Having a Centerstand makes it a snap but I am sure that you can figure a way to do it with just a sidestand (if you are riding with someone else the sidestand will work well. One leans the bike on the sidestand to get the rear wheel off, the other lubes.)

I follow the Rosey Toes Method. I use Wurth HHS2000 which does make a mess but the chains last! With every tank of fuel and after every ride in the rain.

That's it. That's al you have to do. Take a can with you and you are good to go.

does 1 person have to hold the bike upright when using that thing?

No, I use it with the bike on the side stand. A little care is required when rolling it onto the rollers to ensure things are straight.

I'll have to agree with Tom here. I've had 60k on an oem chain before. I never clean my chain on long trips, just lube at end of day. In fact i hardly clean my chain, i've only cleaned it 2x last season

Do you use a wood block or something to have the bike level?

Nope, on a angle the less contact surface you have the easier it is to spin the wheel, just be sure you have good solid ground.

Ohhh awesome tip!

hrm, do you know what the difference is between the axle and spool type?

It's the same tool placed in 2 different spots for advertising. It doesn't do anything that a 1"x2" x 13.5" piece of wood won't do.
