30000km bike,

Hidden treasure, maybe the old owner left a goodie or 2 under the seat?

what would you look for in a used bike? (when you are buying one)
thanks!

everything, and if the owner claims that it has been done but there are no detailed receipts to prove the work then it hasnt been done, no matter how convincing the story

err... and if you do the work yourself... like a lot of riders...?

Then it hasn't been done in my books lol

I hope if you claim you did the spark plugs in july of last year that you'd have a receipt for the right spark plugs dated july of last year.

Unless you're a mechanic i wouldn't buy a bike from anyone who claimed to have maintained everything themselves, after all how many people here can successfully adjust valve clearance?

LOL

I've probably done 10 complete bottom-end overhauls. My race bike has an engine that I built myself - several years ago!

Have you met the average person?
Have you talked to the average person selling a motorcycle? They'll point at 8 year old worn out tires and tell you they're still good. When i was looking at a couple bikes last year 90% of the sellers had no idea what a valve clearance even was. Another guy told me you don't need to do one unless you hear them ticking :lmao:

I when I got my CB600F I required a safety, I went to a licensed mechanic, he claimed my fork seals were leaking and they had to be changed. That cost me 300+ with the safety included.

After a few months, I bought a set of Ohlins front springs and decided to change them myself with a help of a friend. When I took the old forks off, the left fork had half the amount of oil the right one did...

Never again.

yeah, you get those types, put you also get people who know about bikes and cars etc. Those are the people that I would like to buy a used vehicle from.
Way back in the day I did an engine overhall on my old Suzuki 250cc. I wouldnt touch my bike these days myself, as its all computerized and needs specific tools. lol

This question is so ambiguous.

I'd think the existence of the bike would be your first concern... but then we start getting all philosophical.

Are you buying a vintage bike to restore? Then it doesn't matter.

Are you buying a learner bike that you will sell after one or two seasons?

Are you upgrading to...........something???????????

Why not help us out a bit here and tell everyone what type of bike it is and how old it is. 30,000km means nothing on a 1 or 2 year old Gold Wing, or most bikes for that matter. 30,000km on a 10 year old bike that hasn't been used much or stored properly over the winter might be more of an issue. As to receipts, great if you have the dealer do everything and it's documented, but don't discount owner maintained bikes as many owners do a good job of maintaining their bikes.

Reciepts for the oil, tires, chain lube, etc. etc.

seriously...

I don't think I have receipts for any of that. I do have about 5 jugs of dirty Motul and 3 cans of lube sitting on the shelf...Also after 60k, fresh rubber and EBC rotors I don't think I'd need proof that I changed them...

I do all my own work and keep my receipts for parts and supplies that were paid for by CC, much was by cash though...but still not gonna bother digging them all out to prove it. The proof is what is there in front of you....the bike condition. When buying, claimed internal work, I take with a grain of salt.
