Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

My buddy in TO wants to import a new Kawasaki dirt bike from the States. I live in Tampa. Apparently it's now hard to find a US dealership that is willing to sell to a Canadian and file the RIV paperwork. One dealer suggested the bike be registered in my name. Then I guess I would sign it over to my buddy somehow and I would file the RIV paperwork??? Anyone know of a Kawasaki dealer in the States (close to TO) that would sell to a Canadian and file the RIV paperwork? If not, does the title transfer thing sound kosher?

Title transfer thing is fine, but your friend will be paying two taxes this way - Florida taxes, and Ontario HST (13%). Just find a dealership that will sell him a bike directly.

If you're buying used from a private person and not registering bike, then you should not be paying any taxes. New is a different story. I know with cars some states will charge you tax and some won't, New Hampshire does not charge taxes on new cars if you're buying out of state, if that helps.

What is special about vehicles that are older than 15 years old? Do you still need a recall clearance letter for those?
 
Just imported a 2010 Ducati Streetfighter yesterday. The biggest hustle was convincing customs the I really only paid the amount on the invoice, they had a hard time believing the 4k savings over the book value.

They went as far as going through my phone to read old e-mails, so make sure you have all receipts, seller contact info and even e-mails confirming the final price.

Now its time to do her up!!!! :)
 
Pretty sure NY state does not charge tax to out of state purchasers, or Michigan. I'd approach a dealer in one of those states first, nice and close.

Did you pay the $500 to ducati canada/northamerica for the recall letter?
 
Just purchase a Ducati Monster 796 from Tampa, Fl. It only had 483 miles on it. Rode it up last weekend through rain and -6 degree weather to Toronto. I just have to get the RIV inspection from a Canadian tire then Registar and License it. When it's all and done and I have time, I may write something up.
 
Guys, I found a bike in the US I want to buy, got the title faxed to me by the owner and I also got insurance for the bike. I'm going Friday to pick it up from Ohio.
Now I have one question, what do I need to fax/email to Lewinston US border? Just the title? Also, does anyone have their fax number and/or email address or where can I find it?

Does anyone have any insight the process of importing a bike "into" Canada that's already in the country? From what i understand, its a different process.
 
I just brought a bike back from Pennsylvania and found out you no longer need to fax or email a copy of the title to the border. They actually don't accept emails that have an attachment. You do need to give them 3 days notice still, but the only info needed in the email, is the make/model/year of bike, along with the VIN. Again, no attachments.

And again, without telling people where you crossed the border, your info is useless unfortunately. Some locations (if I remember Sarnia is one of them) still require fax. Queenston/Lewistion has been asking for plain text e-mails for years now.
