Ripped Licence Plate Sticker

I recently discovered that my current plate sticker on my cage has been compromised.angry9: I suspect the thief wanted the whole sticker. But since the sticker is mounted on several years worth of expired stickers, they were not successful in peeling it off. They did manage to rip the "3" from the "2013". The registration number is still visible; it's just that the right hand corner has been torn off. What implications will I face should I be pulled over? Is a replacement sticker necessary? Thanks GTAM !!

The registration # is still there, your plate can be run to determine the expiry, I would think you're fine. Although you may find a couple of traffic stops occur while they investigate.

For the potential hassle, I'd check to see what the MTO can do for a replacement sticker... or look at your 2014 sticker early.

Yes, you need a replacement sticker.

Section 7(1)(c)(i)

No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless, evidence of the current validation of the permit is affixed, in the prescribed manner.

HTA OREG 628 9.
(1) Evidence of validation issued for use on a number plate shall be affixed:
(a) where the permit is for a commercial motor vehicle, in the upper right corner of the number plate exposed on the front of the motor vehicle; and
(b) in all other cases, in the upper right corner of the number plate exposed on the rear of the motor vehicle

Government revenue is $110 for this one I believe :) .

From the MTO site:

"...Bring the damaged sticker (if applicable), vehicle permit, name of insurance company and policy number, and reason for requesting a replacement. [TABLE="width: 700"]

7 bucks gets you a new one....

[h=2]Replacing your Validation Sticker[/h] The ministry will replace validation stickers that have been lost, stolen, damaged or removed by enforcement staff. You may require a Safety Standards Certificate or mechanic's signature on the inspection form if the sticker was removed by enforcement staff. Visit a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office to complete an Application for Registration. Bring the damaged sticker (if applicable), vehicle permit, name of insurance company and policy number, and reason for requesting a replacement.

+1The stick really means nothing. When I got caught on my way to the MOT in my summer car the police told me that they run the plate to see if its registered not the sticker. The sticker on the ownership the ownership counts more.

The sticker is still required and can result in an infraction, if absent or incomplete.

I wouldn't replace it, the thief will be coming back to get the new one.

I recently got pulled over for speeding. Cop says "your missing half your sticker" and she could write a ticket but ended up letting me slide on both (15 over in a school zone phewwww), I was told I should fill out a police report. Didn't have time for that so just went and bought a new one. it was 7$. I would replace it. I think mine was taken at the Burlington Go station, my cage is either home in a garage or parked in the parking garage at the GO.

HUH? it's a 110$ fine for an expired sticker. There is a reason for that sticker, it's not just there for looks....it's validates your plate.:violent1:

Leaving old stickers on your plate makes it easier to steal the new one. One officer told me that leaving the old ones on can also result in a ticket but I didn't buy it, because it's such a common practise.

From now on I will peel the old one off before I affix the new one. But I bought plate protectors so there is additional protection from prying fingers. Thanks Rob !

HUH?,people steal the sticker all the time(ask the OP)I've had mine ripped off twice. This is why sticker on the ownership also validates the plate. The police run your plate 100% of the time as the sticker is impossible to see from a distance and it could be stolen. The one time they did see it missing I was told go to the MOT and get new one and it wasn't much money 10$ i think. If the ownership sticker is missing or not affixed you will get a ticket even if the plate matches a lose ownership sticker.
They would probably get ya the second time around but the officer would have to be power tripping to bust you on it the first time unless your ignorant. If just the 3 from 13 is missing the registration numbers will still match. The plate sticker is the third and final fail safe for proving the plate is registered.I seriously doubt he will get a fine,I didn't.Has it happened to you,did you get a fine?
