As we are on motorcycle we are always at risk. An unfortunate situation has occured to someone I know at arms length. This person was struck by a car while crossing at an intersection. This individual sustained a head injury (no broken bones) and was likely in a coma of sorts. What went down is he was unconscious and unable to speak for himself. After being shuttled from one hospitol to the next the doctors indicated surgery was required. For whatever reason they didn't want to do this surgery and advised the family to remove the life support. The family went along with these doctors and 4 hours laters he passed on.

Would you trust your family to push the doctors to do everything they can? I think not.

I am thinking I may need to start wearing one of these with clear instructions laid out.

In the instructions a law office should be included to be notified. Does anyone know of any law offices that will act in this capacity for motorcyclists? Power stems from the barrel of a gun. When the doctors, the ontario government, and hospitols know their actions are under scrutiny I guarantee you will receive the motivation required to put you on the road to recovery.

Not a lot of information to go by, and from a layman as well but I would trust a doctor over a family member, they know best. And I wouldn't carry so much personal information around with me in an easily lost bracelet. My DL and donor card is more than enough.

Lawyers are not doctors and they would have to research the particular situations to make the right recommendations. Considering the consequences of a bad decision the research could be lengthy and expensive. With modern life support systems we could have warehouses full of semi dead people as the situations are debated. We've all heard of the Awakenings miracles but also seen the drooling alternates.

The question becomes a reasonable amount of time. How long does it take to recover from sprains and broken bones? This could take months. In this situation he was knocked unconscious and was left to opinion. As he couldn't speak there is no way to know what he truly wanted. Everyone is different and everyone has a different will to live. If he was placed in this situation by a drunk driver or some other act that wasn't his fault is this what we are to expect from Ontario Society?

This thread raises a point if you are rendered unconscious and someone else can decide if you are worth more dead than alive. I myself will make that decison. In this situation being hit by a car, auto insurance would have paid for his rehabilation. If I am involved in a motorcycle accident I have a million dollars to work with. If I am pronounced dead, insurance only has to pay 35000. Figure it out, you still trust others to act in your interest?

Happily married 24 years, I have no doubts. If I did, I wouldn't be married. Your pessimistic opinion isn't everybody's reality.

Sometimes being alive is not only being able to breathe but the quality of life and consciousness
As i get older, i have less fear of dying. But i still have strong preservation instincts. The only thing i worry about is my family, they will miss me too much if i am gone

Your pessimistic opinion isn't everybody's reality.

Actually my pessimism is your reality. Go to the insurance section of GTAM for a reality check when comes to insurance in ontario. Ohip bills your insurer when it relates to a motor accident. Most of the insurance premium for a motor vehicle is for accident benefits. People of Ontaio are subjected to the maguinty health premium of 300 to 900 and whatever income taxes are relegated towards health care. In ontario you pay up the rear for this so great public health system we supposedly have. There was a story on w5 or fifth estate where doctors decide if you are worth their effort or not. In this situation for whatever reason the doctors didn't want to do the surgery that could have saved him in turn they did a sales job on the family to go along with them in pulling the plug. If this happened in the states, the hospitol would have queried the health insurance to see what you are covered for and or presented the cost to the family and did the surgery. In Ontario, it's about saving tax dollars or masking medical incompetence.
