Friend got into accident - advice needed

So a friend of mine, this morning, rear ended somebody.

He gave his info, but the other person did not give their info. The other person is now saying that the repairs will cost 2,000. There was no noticeable damage on the other car (scratch included), but my friend did notice a bump on the side of the other person's car where he DID NOT HIT.

Should he go to the collision center, pay the 2,000, or just ignore?

Thanks!

Your friend should be aware that there is a scam out there where people literally cause these kinds of accidents to extort money from them. I know someone this happened to, it was an eastern european couple who made a hysterical scene and demanded money even though there wasn't even a dent. The police on the scene didn't press a charge and the case had to go through the insurance ombudsman because the report raised my acquaintance's insurance, in spite of there being no charge.

I hope your friend used his camera phone on the damage. If these jokers want their car fixed, they have to go to your body shop and you will only pay the body shop. Anything else is a blackmail attempt. There is the small matter of "leaving the scene" and he should talk to a lawyer, but really, if nothing happened, nothing happened. If he is really concerned, have a lawyer contact them about it because criminals are crafty, but they're very easy to intimidate.

step 1 - get the drivers info, if they dont give it call the police, you have to swop info bylaw.
if theres over $1000 worth of damage go to a collision center,

Go to the collision center, say what happended and that the other driver is not giving info, if they did not give info they most likely wont go to the collision center, ignore all under the table deals.

Thank you, will do.

Yes very sketchy The other driver will also get a ticket for failure to report and it sounds like a scam so tell them that if thats what he what he thinks it is.Ask your buddy if he honestly thinks he was brake checked.
It's also possible that theres something wrong as far as suspended license, wrong plates and so on.I would never let an under the table deal go to their shop in fact I would have have him take it the nearest nearest shop while I follow. They will come out and check the car over on the spot for you and give a rough estimate. There can be a lot of damage inside the trunk under the mat that you cant see unless you know where to look, bucking of the floor pan and frame damage.
The flip side of this is that the other driver may think he's letting your buddy off easy by taking the two grand and saving him a careless charge by making him over pay for the damage it would also save him in the long run with insurance.Just something to be aware of.
Also when in and accident I is a good idea to take you phone and get a picture of the plate, vin and record any conversation had, not ileagal without thier knowlege as long as you are not a third party .
This site is full of good cops and lawyers that will point you buddy in the right direction, hope it's ok to post it here.

Your friend should call his insurance company and ask for advice. And no, his premiums won't go up just because he admitted hitting someone.

If they associate his policy number with the incident, it most definitely will. He should call anonymously for advice. Big difference.

so sick of people who pull this. i've been in a few situations where it looked like people were 'trying' to get into an accident with me. coughbramptoncough. let us know how it turns out

Ragu's at it again?

I would send him a copy of Ragu's newpaper clipping with a letter telling him to go away. =D

Get your friend to tell this guy he wants all of his insurance, license, and ownership information so that he can properly file a claim through his insurance. In other words, call his bluff. By all means go to the reporting centre, saying that the other driver failed to provide his information. That's a criminal act. I had someone tap me from behind, hard enough to push my bumper a couple of inces on one side, and refuse to give me her info. She obviously thought that I was going to just wave it off which I was in fact going to do, until she refused. I kept her there for about an hour and a half, waiting for police to arrive.

You have to report. You don't have to file a claim.

Thanks Rob.

The situation is now the guy has come to his house and has called him for the money, which he is currently refusing to give (under my recommendations).

He tried to report to the report center and had the license plate. The accident center said it was a company car and they couldn't figure out who owned it...so they brushed off my friend (wtf?).

I've now told him to just ignore the guy and if worse comes to worse I'll take roadtourin's advice.

Seems like, however, from what Rob is saying you can say driver failed to provide info? Why the hell did the dude working at the report center not pick this up when my gf was there with him trying to report it? Tax dollars at hard work?! >=(

Your friend should do his best to get the name of the other motorist, then try to report again. Hopefully there is some record of his previous attempt to report...?

Apparently there isn't; that is what's worrying me the most. I'm gonna urge him to go again and get them to RECORD the fact that he actually made an effort to report the accident.
