i've noticed barley anything this 2012 in regards to stolen motorcycles

a) are thieves packing up shop by noticing the demand curve reaching its peak?

b) or are riders just getting smarter about how they leave their bikes in the open?

No I'm not a thief. Just curious is all.

a) doubt it
b) doubt it

It's still early.

Yes maybe you are right. The last 2-3 years though, there were quite a few threads popping up in Feb/March.

Damn thieves.

Have police looked into setting up stings yet?

I read an american article somewhere between the end of 2011 or early 2012; police setting up stings for stolen motorcycles in some state on the west-coast.

Wonder when that will happen here...

I am actually very nervous on relocating my bike from Montreal - Toronto.

Maybe I should slap on a hells angels sticker on the rear tail light.......

They did it for bicycles in Vancouver, but didn't seem too interested to try it with motorcycles :(

They are just laying low while they're court cases are proceeding. By this time next year they will be back or replaced by another group looking to fill the void.

They (law enforcement ) are busy with enforcing speed traps. It has the biggest payoff vs work.
Helps keep the insurance industry ticking over.

Any news on those "gangs" that we're busted late last year?

PM R1timmay and ask when he'll be back in business.

What happens to stolen bikes though? Chop shop and sell for parts? Doesn't make too much sense, since I don't think the demand is that high... I heard that stolen bikes get just beat at the tracks.

There's a large stolen bike market in the states and overseas. If your bike is stolen, chances are its at least out of the province pretty quickly. Packed in shipping containers

Cheap track bikes. It was suggested last year that if the VIN's were checked at tracks there would be a lot of people with some 'splaining to do.
