So called upgrades, Why Bother?

Dunno, but it was likely the same person who said that I don't mod my bikes.

Cool I'd love for you to quote where I said that.

At the end of the day, mods can absolutely bring in extra money on top of what a stock used bike would bring in. That's a fact and I've proven it to myself with my own bikes on 5 different occasions. People can and do pay a little more for quality aftermarket parts. And many people also opt to buy modded bikes when presented with a choice of whether to take a bike stock or with mods.

As soon as you can show me where I said that I don't mod my bikes.

Where we differ, is on that amount of money. You seem to think that it's substantial. I think that it's slim to none.

Who's the retard? Someone who has a bike worth 5000, spends a 1000 on mods, and tries to sell the bike for 6000?

The person who looks at a motorcycle as an investment, most people don't expect a return from their mods thats why more expensive addons are usually parted out apon sale. I know I would take a second look at a bike that had all the basic must do mods already done to it, definitely doesn't lower the value in any way. Sounds like you need to sell your bike and get a nice reliable econobox, have you checked out the new honda Fit?

The Honda Fit is a neat little car. I wouldn't mind getting one as my next cage. Almost like a small minivan with the flexible cargo area.

As I see it:

1: Rob is correct.
2: ItIsWhatItIs has strong biased opinions on things he has extremely limited time or experience pondering.

Any younger person who has spent a ton on farkles is going to try to sell the thing (anything) for a high price to recoup some of that money. This person does not know it won't sell for the large amount but tries anyway, always disappointed. The overpriced machine does not sell and a price adjustment occurs, lesson learned (except for cruiser riders who think "lot's of chrome" is like investing in gold bullion). Return the bike to stock, part out the mods and you will get half your return back. IIWII getting angry at kids going through a natural learning process and condemning mods in a sweeping and obtuse gesture is a very self limiting thought process.

Be happy on your CBR50 or whatever it is you ride and look at the big picture. Insulting others and closing your mind is not a way to go through life if you want to enjoy all it has to offer, and is generally the attitude of the elderly.

I wouldn't say substantial but on quality upgrades I've gotten around 30% of retail value. Marchesini wheels, akrapovic exhausts, well known big name stuff like that tends to impress a good number of buyers.

I think it comes down to being able to offer OEM parts to the buyer and them recognizing the value of you aftermarket parts, so they know immediately how much they're paying for those mods attached to your bike.

Theres no hard rule across the board, but I came in here to state that not all mods automatically devalue a bike. If they're good parts, someone will pay extra for them.

Mods to differentiate help you to find your bike at Burrito Boyz if a sport bike, and Port Dover if a cruiser.
That alone can save you hours of trying your key in the wrong bike, and time is money.

Really, Have you read some of the posts? There are some who have put money into mods then try and sell their bike at higher price to recover the cost of their mods. WTF is the sense in that? If they are selling, why did they bother modding the bike in the first place? There is a consensus mods are about personalization. Not everyone is going to like what has been done, never mind paying extra for it. Some posters believe the buyer of their bike should pay for their personalization when many buyers want a stock bike.

As for your suggestions; Do you know what I ride?

There certainly is some sense in that. If you modify your bike then, at the very least, you're narrowing the number of possible purchasers to just those, who would modify it in much the same way.

It's not exactly hard to find people who like an Akrapovic exhaust or a fender eliminator  Well, people who aren't scared of the law forbidding them from removing a fender, that is

And as for modding bikes and then selling them... uh, why not? I get a new bike every one or two years, it doesn't stop me from spending some money on mods to make it my own. I've bought the same parts for different bikes probably 3 or 4 times over. It's part of the fun and the hobby for me. I hate stock bikes with ugly mirrors and big bulky [quiet] exhausts. If I couldn't afford it I wouldn't do it. But on the same token, I've sold every single bike for a premium over stock because the buyers always explicitly asked me to keep some of the mods on the motorcycle and they paid more $$ for them.

But hey, if you expect to get your $30 back for your crappy chinese signals or mirrors then you're probably dreaming. But when you spend money on good upgrades, you'll get some of it back when you sell.

Might take longer for the buyer to show up as a "modded" bike reduces the net you cast on the market, but when that buyer does show up, they'll be more willing to pay a little extra because things are on the bike they would have done anyway.

Different types of bikes warrant different mods and target a different market. A fender eliminator on a VStrom? Vs a fender eliminator on an R6? Get what I mean?

YMMV.

But ,mine is modded, I put thundercat vinyl's on the sides! Man , she's faster!
