off duty cop tries to run me off the road for lane filtering....

Chances of getting caught doing these downtown: 0%

Try not doing these when living and riding in downtown. You'll tear your hair out from all the construction zones, closed lanes, traffic, ganged up streetcars etc.

I work downtown. I have no hair to pull out. The helmet would stop me anyway.

finally someone else with some balls...Also +1 to taking closed roads, going off road on a street bike AND riding on the other side of the orange pylons when they're blocking a whole damn lane. hahahahaha, all you law lovers holding yourselves back thinking its out there for your best interest. Gimme a F'n break.

I don't have balls... I'm female... BTW did you know that all men are women until the egg gets fertilized.... so all you guys have all had biological sex changes... Your balls are really ovaries that changed...

Useless funny fact for the day...

Off-road on a Street Bike: Whatever floats yer boat
What's the consequences for cutting through a public park on your motorcycle? Haven't done it but I've heard of people taking scooters through for shortcuts at night.

I've used closed roads and gone off road a little. Mostly just for exploring though. Often they close the road when it's perfectly passable and there's no one working there so I've gone through a few of those but a couple times I ended up at a bridge that wasn't there anymore. Haven't weaved pylons yet or chosen to ride on the other side to get around traffic.

I've pulled over onto the sidewalk before too on busy roads where there wasn't anywhere good to stop. Once in the GTA a cop passed me while I was checking GPS like this. He didn't seem to mind but I wasn't moving at the time so maybe that's why. What's the penalty for sidewalk riding?

I love filtering, especially on Queen St. West. On the rare occasion I even go on the sidewalk or cut the corner at a gas station.

Haven't done sidewalks yet, but do filter on "occasion". I really fail to see why it's such a big deal here, aside from the legal implications which are more the rider's concern than anyone else's. Filtering and lane splitting are de rigueur in much of the rest of the world, even in California.

I was following a guy down Mount Pleasant the other day on a little 2 stroke bike with bicycle sized tires, the guy was blazing through traffic, puffing blue smoke all along

Because people here don't expect it. And because of the mentality (especially in the GTA) of 'me first' I have seen cars aim to block a bike that was filtering. I have seen cars nearly take a bike out because they are upset about the biker doing what hes doing. We get it whether we are in the wrong or not but we've given them more reason when we start filtering.

Filter should be legal. Thats what bikes are made for.

100% agreed. But sadly its not.

cops get road rage too apparently
he could have easily rolled down his window flashed his badge at the light and berated you then... the whole cut off manuever is dangerous, unsafe, and not at all professional for someone sworn to serve and protect

i generally don't filter, but when/if I do, I expect to get an angry honk or upset motorist... What I don't really expect is someone to try and use their vehicle as a weapon against me after the fact.

I think this is the moral of the story. Cops get road rage too. They also have more options to act on their rage in that they can escalate things with little chance of repercussions on them (some chance, but not high). They're also expected to know better than to lose it in traffic. Most of the ones I know consequently are quite good at controlling their road rage. Better than me by far.

I love filtering in LA. Its the drivers attitude that differ here and there The cop in the OP's story is like a bible zealot stoning the OP for going againts 1 commandment and it goes to all people getting mad for bikers who are using the bikes in its full efficient ability to share lanes.

Seems an apt comparison.

To the heroes suggesting assaulting the cop or telling him to bugger off, you do realize that off duty cops still have the power to arrest you don't you?

What makes you think my post was specifically directed to you? BUT....if that's your reasoning...

Another funny fact: This is the reason the derogatory use of the word "pussy" came about.

So to the rest of you men...quit being a bunch of policing pussies. Thank you.

In a moral sense, the off duty cop endangered the OP's life by cutting him off with a 2 ton cage, which I would say not very smart of him.

lane filtering during stopped traffic - wrong but safer than weaving through traffic, atleast the OP didnt endanger no life.

This thread is full of yawn.

Commuting daily, I have yet to see a driver purposely try to block me when filtering. Even if he does, I'm normally going slowly enough that I can brake without issue. A much more important factor is kids trying to race me off the light

I commute also.... and have seen it happen to the bikers around me. Plus have seen it while caging. Biker zooms past only to grind to a halt because two cars down buddy saw the biker in his mirror and inched forward in just the right way to **** the biker over.

Meh, so far so good

Then you are lucky. And I hope for your sake your luck continues :) Honestly when I see those cars do that I wanna punch them. But just shows the idiocy in the city.

The last time I had a run in with an off duty cop; when the cop was in the vehicle. The cop was screaming at me and berating me; I simply opened my bottle off water and dumped it all over the cops face, and told the cop to cool down and F*** off. The cop responded if I was in uniform I would arrest you, I responded I would drop you before you got out the car.

OP next time your in this situation just flip him the bird.
Yeah right. And then you woke up and realised it was just a dream.

For all of the above anything from a simple bylaw violation, to dangerous operation of a vehicle (Criminal Code charge), dependant upon the circumstances and the mood of the officer.
