need a new cell phone - have no idea...

Fastar, if there is no reasonable third party option out there in the next few years I would choose Android over Apple as well. I agree it's like the "least-worst option". :)

Right? Picking a phone is exactly like voting; there are some great choices available that will never succeed and a couple dominant ones that both stink. Is it any wonder I happen to own a BB10 and also vote Green LOL?

Hooray for the misfits.

Amen brotha! We are part of two cults, M/C'ers and BBM'er. Maybe the GTAM one too seeing as we have been here for so long

It's hopeless. Either you pay Apple ridiculously to force you to do what they want, or you save a bit of money and get your personal info abused by Alphabet.

What a phone that works well, has a great app ecosystem, software updates for all current models, and a past few generations, and several tiers of hardware options for each budget?? What is ridiculous about it, other then personal opinion.

That's just a host based ad-block, it does not work for YouTube and makes web pages pages look like ****. The android YouTube has in app ad blocker, resolution settings, multiple codec settings, zoom and a bunch of other stuff. Take a second and look at the other options instead of hammering WP.
LOL. I didn't even know that youtube ad blocking was such an important must have feature . I've never even thought about it or looked for it before. There is an adblocker app for W10M that says it works for youtube ads; I have no idea if it works and could care less. I'd say there are more important things for people to consider... like not attacking someone who simply suggests WP as an option when someone posts asking for input on inexpensive phone options . And after a thanks was posted for that reminder.

plus the phone can always point you towards nearest ice cream shop! Never a bad thing!
I don't need a phone for that! I've got a built in ice cream positioning system

great hardware, but closed eco system sucks
the resource hogging, mind numbing POS called itunes
is plenty reason to switch to android

funny if you go to XDA or some of the android sites
you see apple people show up that just bought a Samsung

all have the same question, hey is there something like itunes to put music on this?
yeah, it's called Windows Explorer, been around for a few years, you should google it

It's a closed and proprietary hardware system as part of that too. The use of proprietary tech sucks big time. Can't have USB, it has to be a "lightning jack" and "our" cables. Can't be open source mp3 or flac, has to be AAC. Meanwhile other platforms have excellent new standards and tech like wireless charging, USB C, more hardware choices, removable battery, removable/additional storage. The latest Iphone X still doesn't have additional/removable storage .

Apple has some great stuff, but it could be so much more...

Really, every system you buy into is proprietary, when is anything really off the shelf or interchangeable? They give you a cable for the lightening port. I never had a reason to jailbreak a phone, why?

Yeah itunes is a bloated mess, but it works well enough to manage apps. I don't play music on my phone.
Never had a reason to remove the battery either. The hardware lasts long enough by the time you need to replace the battery you might as well replace the phone.

Expansion storage would be great, I can see that one being useful. If I had that option on my 5S I wouldn't need a new phone. Just upgrade the storage.

I've used them all BB, android, nokia, except windows phone. I found Apple's iphone to be the most consistent performer and doesn't have that android flakiness. As mentioned I have a 4 year old phone that still run's great and has been dropped a few times without problems.

That's a sweeping generalization.

No one uses lightning ports except apple so you have to buy special adapter cables. And they have to be apple-only since they have incorporated authentication chips and don't permit 3rd party cables. And soon as apple sells it the price becomes much higher.

Want to fast charge an Iphone X? Need more $$ for an apple adapter cable to get that. https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/3/...rging-usb-c-lighting-power-brick-cable-how-to
Want to use an external DAC on an Iphone, need more money for an apple adapter cable.
Need another apple adapter cable to hook up a camera to a lightning port.
Want to use wired headphones with no headphone jack, need another apple lightning adapter cable.
Need a digital AV adapter... that's another apple lightning cable.

All of those products include cables that make them plug and play with most other phones/hardware. But not apple and the "lightning jack".

And it's great having 3rd party vendor products available. I can pick up a USB cable almost anywhere and very inexpensively. Many vendors means many options which can be so useful, such as offering different lengths, etc. Cables wear out and need to be replaced.

Have to agree, i don't find this very accurate at all.

As a user whose also had every 'brand' except a windows phone i have no real issues with Apple products. I just hate the price point (i suppose i really blame the sheeple willing to pay for this) and the fact they shove software down your throat. Anyone remember the early days of itunes when you would charge your phone at your buddies place and it wiped your play lists/data? ~sigh

@sburns As you may or may not know, I'm tech ignorant. That being said, I believe I still have to play with settings for some apps that run in the backround and drain the battery (fb, msngr etc) but I'm barely a year into my phone and I can kill it it 4 hours. Mind you, I am a heavy user. How do you have a 5s with a battery that is still good?

some good points, and it's all personal preference of course

I have a few androids in service, my daily driver is solid and has no issues
the others have been semi-retired and have had multiple ROMS on them
some have been buggy, some have not

but that is what many like about android, you are free to do whatever you want with it
sure you can play a bit with an iphone, but you have seriously jump through hoops to get
any little bit of software on it that doesn't come directly from apple

did you actually say you use itunes to manage apps?
if you see that as a good thing, you've def drank too much koolaid bro

Attack? Sorry I burst you bubble and you feel hurt. You push W10 no matter what someone is looking for in a phone and how far off your suggestion is.

Yep, we got the reported posts. Only problem is that I can't make head nor tail of what you two are on about, so at the moment I'm only going to say "knock it off".

Oh the horror. Mimico_polak must withdraw his earlier thanks to my post mentioning WM10.

Not withdrawing the thanks lol....the more I read about it, the info I've gotten is that the current slate of phones are still being supported, and no plans on cutting that off anytime soon. No new development, and I wish I snagged the IDOL 4S as it was on sale. But not anymore.

One of my issues is apps that are missing. There's some that I use daily which I would want to ensure they are available (i.e.: OverDrive particularly) but I'm sure there are options.

Anyway for now just doing research...I miss the days of old with simple phones, but that means multiple devices to carry which I'm not fond of (i.e. for audiobooks / music against a simple phone)
