When selling a bike -- Transferring plate ownership?

Hey folks,

Had an interesting question come up the other day.

When selling a bike (or car, etc) privately, if you are planning on getting a custom plate for your next vehicle for example, what is the procedure to transfer your plate to the new owner?

I know transferring ownership basically involves signing over the vehicle's ownership, writing up and signing a bill of sale, and of course the buyer registering the vehicle at the MTO & paying the appropriate taxes. But what extra steps would be involved if transferring the plate as well?

I would assume both parties would need to visit the MTO and fill out some sort of paperwork, either separately or together?

Any advice would be great; thanks.

In Ontario, plates travel with the owner not the car. If you just have a generic plate (ie 999 xxx) and wanted a custom for your next car, you would return the plate the the mto and buy your new custom plate. The new owner of you vehicle would go to the mto and get their own generic plate.

If you are talking about transferring a custom plate with a car (ie 68mustang) I would be interested in knowing how to make it happen. There has to be a way.

That's how I've generally assumed it to be, but I could swear I read somewhere that it was possible to transfer an Ontario plate -- I could very well be wrong.

Another reason the question has come to mind is because I recently saw a plate which had multiple plate stickers on it, one of a different month than the others, making me think it may have been transferred at some point (gift/inheritance of some sort, etc.) But again, purely speculation.

diff months could be a transfer from an immediate relative. Husband to wife or parent to child. I don't think it can go from sibling to sibling though.

As for otherwise in a sale...for generic, there is no point. For a custom, IIRC, the owner gives it up and the buyer buys it...thru the MTO.
