Throttle/switch housing pins breaking off

Today Yesterday I noticed the throttle housing on the TL1000S was very wiggly... unsurprisingly the little plastic pin that holds it into place has broken off. A long time ago, actually - somebody else tried putting a tiny self tapping screw into its place, and that did kinda work, for a while.

This has never seemed like a very good system to me, of course it's not the first time I've seen it break, but as far as I know it's ubiquitous. How do you guys deal with it when it happens? I have moderate success with wrapping a layer or two of electrical tape around the handlebar, turning the switch housing into a clamp. Wondering if there are better ideas out there
