Factors in biker's fatalities & collisions:
#1 Left-turners
#2 Rider's excessive speed
#3 Loss of control
Police says 25-30% of the time Riders are not doing anything wrong.
Not sure where they pull the stats, but keep reading... take it with a grain a salt.
My key learning is "to approach every intersection with caution on the assumption I am not only at higher risk but I may not be visible". This saved me a few times in Markham on this past saturday afternoon (in Markham, everyone does 70km and often running ambers and reds at intersections) I remember in downtown this was a bit less of a problem because traffic flow was a bit slower, and a bit less "big cars" like SUVs and trucks.
Ride safe everyone.
