The four point thing is magnets and the sensor is a hall effect sensor. Sends an on/off pulse signal over the speed sensor wire. If the speedo is correct measured against GPS and the odometer is wrong, only thing I can think of is that the odometer calculation is off. I would try the cluster swap already suggested and check it out. Maybe it's a common issue.
