Need a ***** and giggles ride for tomorrow....aaaaand, GO.

Just as well that I didn't pass you they're repaving the #7 in spots. Had to wait in a couple of lineups for the escort truck.

p.s. WTF is going on in the GTA with roadwork?!? Why can't someone have planned this out in a logical manner, fined those who are late, and delayed those that are alternatives for the late ones?!?

 What makes you think it is not right on schedule?
Roadwork seems to happen when they have the money to do it.
We complained loud about a stretch of cold patched pavement out this way, so the township reverted 4 k of it to gravel road in just 1 day. Now it's bumpy, dusty loose gravel and will stay like that until council has the money to fix it.

... but we do have really good ditches! We spent loads on those last year :|

Mine's no garage queen either, barely have time to clean it, but when I do it shines up nice. I don't mind dirt and gravel roads now.

I don't get it either. I've been seeing it first hand for the past few months. I live near Kingston Rd and they have been doing lots of road work. But it has been dragging on for months, for no reason I see at all. The crews will do a small stretch then disappear for weeks, then come back again, rinse and repeat and it's still not finished. From what I can see it is not something extensive, repair curbs and refinish the road. Shouldn't this be like clockwork now?

This time of year is kinda typical for road work as all of it has to be finished by mid Nov when the cut off is before it starts to get cold. So you will see a bunch of new stuff and somehow everything will be finished in time.

I guess this is how it goes for padded Gov contracts, but it shouldn't be this way.

Exactly! If they'd finish it too soon, someone would be asking "why did we pay so much for something that only took X days/weeks/etc to do?"

This is why a private consortium like 407ETR does their work MUCH quicker - it's private funds, not public ones. As much as I despise their atrocious toll rates, they at least have their act together on the construction side.

They have a direct feedback loop of longer construction equals reduced revenues. Public road agencies don't seem to give a crap about the chaos caused.

I have no problem with construction, but I want a site occupied until it is done. The 400 has been under construction with lower speed limits for years and I don't think I have ever seen more than 20 people working on the entire stretch. The vast majority of the time the construction sites are vacant except for the police hunting in the low speed zone.

Well I guess that is part of the problem, why does it take so long, when they know it shouldn't, and if they can finish it quicker pay them less, but give them more work to do someplace else to make up the difference. As there is always more to do.

cost plus
bid the job at a loss with a cost plus clause

remember the stories about SkyDome?
concrete truck goes in one gate
gets his ticky signed
drives through site without unloading
goes back in and gets the ticky signed again

someone gets an envelope to look the other way

Tony Sporano style of business

The longer the construction co's say it'll take the higher they can justify the bill to the Government. I get your point though in that the same revenue stream can just be split over more jobs taking the same total time … there's plenty of inefficiencies at the job sites I'd bet that prevents that.

Like was mentioned on the 400, 427 is the same. That stretch from 409 to the top was just 2 lanes each way forever. They've still not opened up all those lanes.

They spread calcium chloride on it today, several inches thick in a couple of places.

Is that the finer looking gravel?
No calcium chloride is the stuff that looks like road salt but absorbs moisture out of the air. It rusts metal way faster then road salt.

Avoid popping wheelies on a harley demo. A buddy is longer welcome to ride with the motor company after finding the "sweet spot" on a Buell.

would still be worth it.

... maybe if you do a really good one they won't mind it

Did he drop it or something? How would they even know..unless it was a chaperoned test ride?

I test rode a Goldwing a month or so back. Spent an hour on it all alone. I could have wheelied it the entire ride had I wanted to. And yes, a Goldwing can wheelie. ;)
