M2 and M tests question

Hi guys!

For context first, I'm considering on buying a bike maybe next year or the year after since I'm currently finishing university and the money is tight right now to think on buying one before graduation. I already know how to drive a bike (almost 10 years driving motorcycles of different sizes and different types of roads in Colombia where I'm from), so I was thinking on getting the license from now since I have to wait those times for the M2 and M (for the car license they allowed me to skip the wait times and go straight for G after the G1, for the bike they didn't. Perhaps because I got the car license like 3 years ago almost when I arrived to Canada and just decided to get the bike's now, but don't really know, sad for insurance purposes though).

Now, the question, I just got the M1 and I was wondering if I'll be able to use my cousin's bike for the M2 test and the M test (for the M I'll likely have the bike by then, but it would be nice to know just in case as well). Since the website says one may be borrowed and whatnot. The following question is the important one, how is the insurance bit in this part? Since it's just borrowing it, does he have to add me on his insurance or is not necessary since it's just borrowed for the tests? Does he has to be present the day of the exam to prove ownership of the bike?

Thanks for any insights you may provide! :D

Welcome to the forum!

1) Yes you can borrow anyone's bike for the M2 & M road tests.
2) Any vehicle borrowed or otherwise will require proper insurance and working lights & horn. He does not have to add you to his policy, insurance follows the vehicle in Ontario, not the person. However, if you had an on road incident his insurance would be liable and his record would take the hit.
3) He does not have to be present, just ensure you have the registration and insurance slips with you for whatever vehicle you bring.

All that aside, you should start checking with insurance. Odds are they are going to want you to take a Motorcycle Safety Course prior to offering you insurance, even if you pass the road exam at Drive Test. 2 day on-bike training with exam at the end of day 2, will run about $550+. They will provide the motorcycle.
