Great stuff, though it misses all the times he ended up picking gravel out of his leathers...
I'm fascinated by his 'butt first' riding style. I've never noticed just how much his upper body stays over the bars, and it's especially pronounced compared to today's elbow draggers.

yeah I was a schwantz fan way back when
crashed so many times he pizzed me off and I started calling him floppin schwantz lol
his always balls out style, made gp racing very entertaining
he won the world championship in 93.

To me, more than any other sports rivalry, Schwantz and Rainey are inseparable. The fact that Schwantz couldn't even finish a season after Rainey's paralysis says a lot.
I'm a big Doohan fan, so after the heartbreak of '92, the next couple years were fun to follow. I rarely got to actually watch a race, though, so was spared some of the processions as Honda took complete control of the class...

For you youngin's the late '80s was a high water mark for motorcycle racing. Big spectator crowds, there was sponsorship monies, contingency monies and actual race prize monies, you could MAKE money racing, all the teams were on their "A" game and Swantz came out of nowhere, riding a lesser bike and won races.
