I was given a 1981 road bike with a Florida title. It's in my garage now. The person who gave me this bike is not the owner listed on the title.
I have no bill of sale. The "certificate of title" has the owner's signature under "signature of seller" and a "lien satisfaction" portion still attached. The title states the 1st lien holder as "none". It's dated 2007.
I plan to go to Service Ontario to see if they can check the title to confirm it's not stolen as a first step. I doubt it is, the guy who gave it to me is pretty stand up. I spoke to an ex-OPP who volunteers at work and he said any cop could check that out from his cruiser. Unfortunately I don't have any friends who are still active cops.
It would be a great foundation for a survival rat bike project but I read the bike importing thread and I don't think it's worth trailering 2 hours to the border and spending any large sum on to make legal. Before I do that I'll strip it down and trailer it to Grand Bend for a few passes through the traps with zero regard for the red line.
Is "identification number" the US version of a VIN?
