How to buy a helmet - one persons opinion

There has always been a discussion somewhere on what kind of helmet to buy. The questions are usually the same, what are the advantages of Snell, DOT, cheap, expensive etc.

The author in the following link warns about purchasing a hinged (flip up) helpmet. The reason is that the hinge near your temple can crush your eye socket. He has an example (with pictures) on his site of a friend of his that was involved in an accident with this type of helmet and although the helmet is in remarkable shape after.. his eye socket was crushed.

One authors opinion on helmets:

Interesting that there are no convertibles sent in to Snell but yet there are 3/4 ( which I wear ) that are approved.

Although the information is a bit dated the article is full of usefull "stuff". It seems like it boils down to Snell approved, fits well and is comfortable and has the creature comforts you desire. And that price is not going to give you more protection.

One thing that is important to me that I didn't see in the article was noise levels in full face helmets. I've had a couple and there can be a big difference.

One thing that some of the reviewers realized is that 3/4 are most often quieter than FF. I have an FF Shoei is use rarely and it's way louder than the Mag8 3/4

A flip lid is a compromise.Your melon is safer in it than in an open lid. It's a consumers choice.

Some modulars, like the Shark Evoline 2, are certified to meet DOT and ECE regulations. If they are good enough for the OC Sheriff and CHP, they are good enough for me.
