Instead of running up roaming charges on the cell or buying a throw away has anyone used Ci-Ci cards or the equivalent to call home. I use wifi and the laptop when I can but sometimes one needs to just talk.
I used Ci-Ci for calling Panama from TO and I could talk for a half hour or so on a $5 card. Simple and cheap, no setups etc. Scratch card for pin number, push buttons and talk. 30 second warning when the card is about to expire.

I used an H2O card. Was way cheaper than roaming but you don't get a lot of data if you need that. Bought the card off amazon and had it shipped to my hotel ahead of time. Set up took about 5 mins.

There is also the option of buying a prepaid SIM card for your existing unlocked phone. Gives you the option to add data much more inexpensively than if you were roaming.

I used to go to the convenience store and just buy a random $10-20 card that they would recommend to call Canada, and those worked out quite well for me. I remember buying a card in Chinese mall around San Jose, which would give 800 minutes for 20 bucks.

The H2O card is a SIM card...you'll need an unlocked phone to use it. My Nexus S came unlocked, it was a case of dropping the SIM in and the going online to activate the SIM.
