Camping/Lodging at the Deals Gap?

wonderings

Well-known member
I am planning a trip south, will be doing a mix of camping and hotels, more camping I hope, depends on weather really. Anyways, part of the trip brings me to Deals Gap, and I was wondering, seeing as this is a bit of a biker hotspot, will I have trouble finding a plot, or hotel if the weather is no good with so many bikers around? I have never been down this way, so not sure what to expect in terms of crowds. Would be in the area end of July, or early August, the trip doesn't have an exact start date yet.

Thanks!

There's ton's of places to stay down there

Just pick the area you want and go from there.

I've stayed here (with a group) for the last 4 or 5 summers, http://www.thetreetops.com/, Stayed one year at Fontana Village Before they renovated. The YZF Thundercat guys have been staying here http://www.ironhorsenc.com/ and I've seen a few others here mention it with good reviews.

Like I said I've been going down the 3rd week of July for 5 or 6 years, usually we only get one "bad" rain day the whole week. The last 2 years it's been awesome the entire week with only the odd early morning shower that dries up by 9 or 10am.

Thanks for the links, adding those to my notes. Though I was more asking about availability, is the area pretty packed during the summer months? I would be there on a weekday, and wont be booking ahead as I dont know exactly when I will be there. I ride solo and only stick to a loose itinerary, so if something pops up, I can just go without worrying about reservations. So if I should up during the week, would I be hunting to find a place to stay or is there plenty of availability?

I was there in 2009, mid July and was able to get a room at Philips Motel one night (cheap, but OK) and at Fontana Village the other night (moderately priced, excellent room) without prior reservation. Deals Gap resort was fully booked.

There were some motels in Maryville if I recall correctly. Also, I think that further down on 129 there were some as well. I stayed at an Econo Lodge in Knoxville (exit 398 from I-40) and it was still relatively close to the gap.

During the week it's not bad, mid Friday it get's busy on the dragon and surrounding area as everyone comes down for the weekend.

Will you have net access? If your in a bind you might even get lucky posting here on GTAM. I ran into BusaBob and a bunch of GTAM guys at Wheelers 2 years ago, It's a small world. You could get lucky and find a GTAM group to help you out if need be. At the very worst you could probably rent some floor space in someone's room if need be as a last resort.

Check the tail of the dragon site, they list's who's down there what week so you will know if any large groups are in the area.

Thanks for the info. I am planning on being there during the week, I am not interested in the crowds. Would start my trip on a Saturday, and just take my time to get there by monday, then do the run tuesday as I head out and east.

Fontana Village has a campground close to Deals Gap. Camping rate is dirt cheap and you're located right by the damn (very nice scenery). The place is nearly empty thru the week, weekends fill up but you should still be able to find a place. Best location for running the dragon.
