Bike Auctions from the States

Looking for feedback from anyone that successfully bid on salvage bikes from across the border. I was looking to pick up a partsbike to fix up my track bike, but the impression I got from most of the auctionsites google brings up look like scams. Upfront you have to buy a membership to the site which ranges from $150 to $200 a year and when you bid on an item you have to pay service fee of $400 as an "international" customer. That seems like a pretty steep service charge on a $500 - $1000 dollar bike. I followed one bike that looked like a good deal at $800 get bid up to $2500 before the auction even closed.

Anybody able to get a decent price on one of those auction?
 
you're using the wrong sites then. try ebay, then scour kijiji and craigslist.
