Been a while since I've posted.
I've got a chance to go to Australia in the fall and I plan to ride from Brisbane south toward Sydney. Not direct, but with a bunch of little inland loops etc..
Does anybody have any experience with routes/roads etc.. in this part of the world.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers,
O

Thanks for the referral.
You might want to contact the OZ ST riders....lots of good people and then go on from there.

ALso not sure what your bike plans are but I'm considering renting out my St1100 for a modest amount just to get it ridden a bit when I"m not here.
Good tourer and the roads around here are lovely and you could tour down to Brisbane then south.
Get the bike trailered back. There is a thread here on it

How long are you planning on being there and what sort of bikes/roads do you like to ride?

Brisbane to Sydney is about a 10hr drive as the crow flies (Pacific Highway). Its a hell of a boring drive though unless you like sugar cane fields. If your doing loops inland on the way down however, there are some fantastic roads and scenery.

I've got 10 days to ride, so lots of leeway for loops and rest stops.
I'll be on a 1200 RT 2 up. Like to ride sweepers pretty much anywhere. Two up with a new pillion though, i'll probably stay away from the hairpin twisties
Wanted to explore the coast/beaches, but it seems that the riding isn't too interesting. Maybe I'll just try to make coastal towns the days end destinations.

North of Brisbane there is Mt Glorious, Mt Needo and Wivenhoe dam that come to mind. Some of the best riding roads in South East Queensland. They do have a few 20kmh incline/decline hairpins though (ive seen a few people wipe out on those). South of Brisbane there is the Gold Coast (beach town) and the Numinbah valley and Advance town, Slowest corners are 40kmh and multiple 50kmh S bends (lots of fun). You could easily spend over 10 days just in this part of the state and not get to all the decent places.

Things to remember though in Aus, There are Cops EVERYWHERE... and they WILL book you for the smallest of infringements (ie: 5kmh over, not indicating, worn tyre, no number plate light etc etc), so best to always follow the road rules. There are also yellow speed suggestion signs before pretty much every corner/set of corners. if you see one of these suggesting 30kmh or below... Slow Down to the suggested speed because its a hair pin. 40kmh and above are generally easier to take at higher speed when on a bike. You will get a feel for the right speed as you spend more time out there.

This is an aerial shot of Advancetown/Numinbah Valley road so you can get an idea of what you can expect. It actually continues south to the NSW border. From the Gold Coast, along this road to the NSW border is about 50-60kms. Generally speaking, the road surface in this part of Australia is much much MUCH better then anything you will find in the GTA.

Used to live there, if you have 10 days start in Darwin through the outback- over to Cairns then down to Sydney should leave a day or 2 for scuba, and must get over to Frazier island but you need a 4x4(rent for the day) well worth it,

Thanks for all the great info everyone.
Last thing: Is there any decent riding down the coast from Brisbane to Sydney or is it mostly freeways?

That's a great link and do take the speed caution seriously. You borrowing a bike or?

There is off freeway riding that is lovely almost everywhere but there is an awful lot of good dirt road as well so check your routes carefully to avoid surprises.
Cannot comment directly on the area you are riding but Aus is the size of the continental US with 8% or so of the population but you are in the more populated area.
Keep the sparse distances in mind on planning as if you are out in the boonies fuel may not be so easy to find and phone coverage can be spotty as well.

But you are in the higher density area.
