Never have I seen a race with such a lack of safety standards. They used giant white beach balls for crash protection!
 
Those big white bags appear to be tote bags common in the transportation industry.

Not a terrible idea honestly, but it's what they're filled with that matters. From what I could see from the few that split open, it looks like they're full of stuffed animal filling or something lol.

On another note, is this a compilation of crashes from multiple races, or was that all one single race? Is this just a bunch of really bad riders in way over their heads skill wise?
 
Prolly filled with plastic bottles.

Well, when you need thousands of bales for 1 week a year, I suspect you make do. They all looked a hell of a lot more comfy than what was behind them.
