2007 Ninja 650R Fuel Economy Poor

I filled up 11.xx litres in my ninja 650R after doing about 130km. According to my calculations that's 8.8l/100km. I should be getting something closer to 5l/100km. When I first started riding on that full tank I would cruise at about 3000rpm. Later I would cruise at about 5000rpm because I liked the responsiveness of the throttle.

I'm not worried because of the cost, I'm worried because when I go for a long trip, I don't want to have to pull over and find a gas station every hour.

What should I do?

Whenever you are just rolling down the road, use the highest gear that it will pull smoothly. Do that for one tank of fuel and then get back to us.

It's possible that the stock fuel mapping is too rich at part load. I've seen a lot of bikes that are like that.

There are 24750kms on the bike. I've owned it since 24500. I haven't done any maintenance yet.

How's the air filter? What do the spark plugs look like? When is the valve clearance check due? Any of the above can cause lousy fuel consumption if they are out of whack ...

First thing you do when you get a bike, is an oil change!!

For sure check the air filter too.

If the muffler is not the stock one, or especially of the catalytic converter has been removed (if it was equipped with one), that can MURDER your fuel economy.

Use http://www.fuelly.com to keep track of your mileage. Seriously, USE IT!

Make sure you're not using 91 octane fuel or especially not 94 from Sunoco/Petro :( Your user manual calls for 87 octane fuel, use it!

For the 18L tank on my Ninja 250, my range has always been between 180-330kms for the 20,000kms and I always heard/read stories on how ppl do 450kms, but I never really believed it :violent1: Lately, I had my gf in town, and I had to ride extra smooth for an entire tank and I couldn't believe my eyes while the odometer slowly climbed upto 400kms.

Turns out 450 for my bike is really possible - must ride solo, and shall never open throttle more than 1/4 =)

^ This!

sounds like you are crusing at way too low rpms 3k?

5k sounds about right.

when you cruise at too low rpm, sluggish throttle is one of the downfalls same w/ bad fuel economy, because you need to dump in more gas to speed up while your lugging your engine i find

Signed up for fuelly, went to the cottage this week. Did about 272kms one way and filled up, it was around 11.3l. Ended up getting 4.0l/100km which is what I would expect! I need to fill up again and see how I did on the way back.

I guess I jumped the gun!

Sounds good! Running 87/regular?

Better than my ZX6 and about the same as I used to get on my 650R.

You have to remember your fuel economy will be a lot worse in the city.

Yes sir!

After this long trip, I am going to need to clean the chain and lube it. I have some lube that the previous owner gave me, but I need to buy a solvent from Canadian Tire or somewhere else nearby. The lube I have is AMSOIL MP HD (Heavy Duty Metal Protector). The manual recommends SAE 90. The can doesn't say anything with regards to that.

Suggestions?

Best lube: http://www.lowes.com/pd_213197-3996...&Ntt=dupont+multi&pl=1&currentURL=&facetInfo=

Only available at Lowes.

Cleaning your chain is over rated, unless you want it to look pretty.

Newb question: how do I know if my chain is o-ring, x-ring or sealed?

Sealed IS o-ring or x-ring.

If you look REALLY close you should be able to see the x-rings or o-rings.

X-rings:
