Thoughts?

I want to do some distance this year and this looks to have long legs.

Anything to be concerned about?

I think if I can get on the KLR I should be hoist my leg over this one.

Great bike but for a 93 it should be priced under $4000. I rode the ST1300 and was blown away how good it is. If the 1100 is half as good then you'd do well.

Just remember that's in Australia, is tax in and 9 months of insurance included.

I like that he has two different windscreens and good luggage. This was going to be touring year and hell of a better set of wheels than the KLR for distance.

Shame to only have 3 months each year to ride it.

[h=2]Recalls and common problems[/h]
Corroded swingarm on a 1994 ST1100

Models manufactured from 1991 to 1993 were issued a recall due to issues with a defective bank angle sensor which may have caused the engine to shut off unexpectedly.[SUP][4][/SUP]
Corrosion on the swingarm, seizing brake calipers and poor paint quality are issues which affects the older bikes particularly

Not too worried as the bike has had constant service but thanks for the heads up.
Look like I got it - still available and in contact and buddy in Aus is helping out.
First litre bike and only 45 lb more than the Burgman 650 , lower seat height than the KLR and huge tank.
Should finalize tonight....gotta love the internet ......half a world away and snag a good machine. :D
Friends in faraway places.

Looks like it's all a go - money hand over on Wednesday - nice to look forward to. Always wanted a Honda 4
Should be good for a few ride reports. :D Gotta remember to take the Beadrider

you see how good a deal $4200 is for Australia

$4200. Aus dollars is $4368. Cdn so .....

teasing , its a great bike. I've put a few miles on a '94 and it was much more nimble than the GL1100 I was used to. I've heard of leaking seals on older bikes, but its 19yrs old, there's bound to be something.
They are very nice to ride and the engines are pretty bullet proof, change oil and enjoy.

nice bike, was looking at these for my next bike as well. Ended up buying a fjr1300 loaded for a deal I couldn't afford to pass up.

Given the other bikes there $4200 Aus or $4368 Cdn ;) is a steal but I'm surprised how inexpensive they are in North America.
The other two listed were $9k with higher mileage and fewer farkles.

Figure it's been regularly serviced and has the roadworthy certificate so should be good for a few more years. Might even coax the GF out on this one as I didn't get a flat no this time :D
( she used to ride her own small bike offroad and is research nurse now and saw her share of road rashes when she was getting her degree and working emerg ). The KLR650 was converted to a single seater to save insurance costs. But she seemed open to the idea this time of two up.

That touring windshield looks a bit daunting - that will go first thing - switch to the smaller screen so I can see over.

Gotta get on google and plot some tours :D

dont ditch the touring shield till you try it for a few miles, its not as cool looking as the lower shield but they are well designed and dont buffer much in the wind or cause to many cross breeze issues.
A plague of locusts or in your case migrating cane toads are better bouncing off a tall shield than your sunglasses

Won't be ditched but we'll see how the sports shield is - one thing I love on the Burgman Exec is the adjustable height screen.
It's got the touring screen on so will leave it for a few days and then see.
Thanks for the heads up.

I've had mine for 10 years and it continues to be a great bike. Long term, IMHO, Honda build quality and durability is very good. With the groups I ride with lots of 1100's have over 150,000 - 200,000km and are still in great shape. Km record so far is a 97 or 98 with 645,000km. Bikes with corroded swing arms and rotted out collector exhaust boxes are almost always older UK bikes where people ride all year long on roads that are heavily salted. Also, you'll find the ST to be very top heavy, so be careful around the parking lot and gas stations when doing slow speed turns from a stop, use rear brake only in these situations and you'll be fine. When coming to a stop make certain you don't put your foot down on loose gravel. If it start to fall just let it go, that's what the side wings are built for. These bikes are designed for long distance rides and with a good aftermarket seat (Russell for me) 1,000km days are no problem.

thanks - the KLR is crazy top heavy - been under it a couple of times in the dirt. - Oil can on stilts tho it's not bad from a weight standpoint.

The Burgman weighs almost as much as the ST but weight is way down low so feels lighter than it is.

I've always been leery of the litre+ bikes for that top heavy aspect.

The Burgman likes to torque over if the front wheel is turned - I'm used to using the rear brake on slow turns and some engine braking.
Will miss the ABS in the wet in Aus.

Not going to use it for around town - have the KLR for that. This will be the big tourer. Have to go easy on the round abouts tho till I get used to the different weight.
I'm hoping the bead-rider will be okay for now.
Have the Russell on the Burgman and it is a total treat ....could not do 1,000km days without it.

Thanks for tips.

Those are excellent tourers (as are the newer 1300's). I know a couple guys with them and they love them (they're always complaining about the Harley tourers they ride with as they're always stopping for fuel when the Honda's still have plenty).

Can't go wrong with an ST1100. My '97 had just over 70,000 km on it when I bought it and after six seasons now has 140,000+ km. As reliable as a rock; pretty much all you need to do is regular oil changes, add gas and replace the tires once a year. The most common concern with the 91 thru 95 models was the 28 amp alternator. The 1996 and newer models have an upgraded 40 amp unit that could more easily take the load.

You will likely find that the bike has greater range than you. A full tank will easily take you just over 450 km, so you may find that you want to stop more often for refreshments, bathroom breaks, or just to stretch your legs. I replaced the stock seat with a Corbin that I found was more comfortable and less slippery than the stock saddle; however, everyone has different needs so check around for the best fit. I also replaced the stock shield with one that was 4" taller in order to provide more protection. While this better protection is great in the rain and on colder days, it can be a little warm behind it on hot days. I wish it had the adjustable shield that the ST13's have.

For more information than you will ever need on ST's, you should check ST-Owners(dot)com.

Got lucky - guy got a higher offer but he honoured our deal. That was close.

Thanks for tips.

Never cold in Tropical Australia but it sure does rain. Given the mileage I see that certainly is a strong motor - hell at 77,000 km seems hardly broken in :D

I joined the ST forum already - of course there a GTAM member popped up and said high - small world eh.

Until I go there full time the bead rider and stock seat will have to do - What I really miss ( on the KLR as well ) is the backrest the Day-long has.
Thinking about put a biggish tank bag behind me - used to do that on the Silverwing and it worked okay. Might work on the ST

He's got a fresh battery so that's a relief. What's the drill with a cold start? Is there a choke?

What's the drill with a cold start? Is there a choke?

The 11's have carbs and a choke. Cold starts are full choke and hit the starter. Usually starts pretty fast and runs up to about 2,000 rpm. I let it warm up a few minutes while turning the choke down and then ride off while the choke is still on about half way. Once underway you can ease the choke off and only have to worry about stalling if you come to a stop within the first five minutes or so.

hah - it was MEANT to be.

Got one of the free Honda kickstand plates at Rock the Red last year even tho I did not need it on the Burgman.

Sure will need it in the heat in Aus.....and damn it matches the bike :D
