West coast and back - your "Must see" list.

Agree, I never experienced flying and renting a bike, just assumed that motorcycle rental in a different city is a different experience than renting a car from the terminal. In my estimates, I was considering all the time it takes from leaving the door until hitting the road on the bike, with...

West coast and back - your "Must see" list.

Realistically, flying out and then back to and from Cali/Vegas plus renting a bike there could easily take two full days. Considering that it is possible to get to and from Denver / Sturgis in about 1-1.5 days, the math doesn't look so bad. The difference between flying there or riding all the...

West coast and back - your "Must see" list.

On the way to Vegas Moab (taking UT 128 just before Moab), Utah Hwy 12, Bryce and Zion would be the highlights. On the eastbound leg you can skip the Bighorns, nothing special to see there. Between Beartooth and Sturgis I would recommend US 212 and a detour to Devil's Tower (if you remember...

Route to Deals Gap via BC and Cali

Back in 2009 I did a coast to coast roadtrip, 13,500km in two weeks, and had a blast. San Francisco, PCH, Death Valley, Vegas, Deals Gap, Virginia Beach and many other places in between left me with some of the most memorable moments of my life. Would I do it again? Not a second time, as my...

    Trailer noob

Some years ago I used to tow a 300kg bike on a light homemade trailer, with a Mazda Protege 5. First, to answer your question "am I missing anything": 1. You did not mention anything about straps to tie down the bike. It is not very straightforward process and if it's not done right there could...

    Motorcycle Navigation

You made me feel such an amateur, I dropped my bike last year near Moab and totally forgot to take pictures. Now how could I start an argument with you without such pictures? ?

    Motorcycle cup holder?? Why?

Had one for years. When touring I like to be able to reach the water bottle without stopping, very handy on hot summer days (think July in Utah or Arizona). Also, sometimes I buy a coffee from one place but would like to enjoy it somewhere else.

Has anyone every needed or wished that they had an IDP?

My experience relates only to EU travels, with the last trip in August this year. Five years ago I've rented a car in UK and was not asked for an IDP (nor did I have one), but last summer in Athens, the car rental company specifically asked me for the IDP (and I had it this time). Read an angry...

Large Kuryakyn Touring Bag - Free

Was planning to throw in the garbage my old Kuryakyn touring bag, have a new bike and this bag will not fit. If anybody interested can have this bag for free. It is a large bag, comes with rain cover and all the original straps. Some D-ring connectors broke and have replaced them with tie-wraps...

    Bike Camping Gear

When camping I carry a double size air mattress and an air compressor. However, whenever I can I book a KOA cabin, which is best of both worlds, still having the camping experience with outdoor living, fire pit and picnic table but sleep on a mattress in a heated / cooled place.

    Tail of the Dragon

On the Parkway itself there are a few visitor centers which offer decent lodging, but those tend to be expensive, check the BRP website. Another option is to get off the Parkway and find a hotel/motel nearby, plenty of options. Last time we've been on the Parkway we slept in Roanoke, which is a...

    Tail of the Dragon

The entire BRP + Skyline Dr (800km) requires about two full days of riding. It does get boring after a while, because of the same scenery over and over again, but wouldn't suggest skipping it altogether. Depending how much time you have, you can decide to skip certain sections and take other...

    Another 407 rant

I avoid the 407 because I really dislike their racketeering style, but last month had to swallow the bullet and rushed to a meeting on the toll road. Sure enough the parasites from 407ETR took the opportunity and charged me about the same amount I paid a month later on I90 for 400+ kilometers...
