To be clear I still have the screen on (at least on my adv/tour bike), I just meant it's real purpose was just as an $80 sacrificial lamb so my way more expensive phone doesn't have to take the abuse. Also, with touring, I get off the bike a lot, go for a little stretch walk, scenic lookout...

For me it's just nice to not have to have my phone mounted, shaking, exposed to the sun/rain for tens of thousands of km. I have a bluetooth comm but unless I'm riding with the missus, or covering long distances and want some music or an audio book, it basically stays off.
