They should be able to tell him exactly where it is. BMW is pretty good with being up front about everything (depending on the sales person!).
My wife’s new bike has been born/has a VIN, but is sitting at port waiting to make its way across the ocean. Currently no ETA.
…and when you finally get the VIN, you get to deal with the delays due to lack of shipping containers, backups at ports, labour shortages, etc.
I actually factored all this in when I decided to buy a bike in late November 😁

RP Tuning slip-on with removable db killer. Only used for approximately 100km. Perfect shape. This fits a 2021 model so presumably will fit a 2022 as well.
