    Thank you West Virginia!

I noticed you stayed at the Super 8 in Elkins. I also stayed there in June. I also had some friendly WV chats with locals in the hotel parking lot (though not of the sad variety). Just curious, did you check out that all you can eat buffet across the street from the Super 8? It was pretty good...

The Ducati and the West Virginian Ride

I totally understand why you had such a good time. I rode to West Virginia twice this summer because of was drawn by the warmth and southern hospitality of the people. Other areas may have more rugged beauty but only the southern states have a charm that keeps you coming back again and again.

    Conversations with Americans

I've been to the U.S. four times this summer and on two of my trips I met Americans who were eager to learn about our universal health care. As I explained the pros and cons of our system it became apparent in my conversations that Americans are earnestly concerned with the cost of their health...

I'm jealous. Go home. I don't want to hear any more.

Aug 1 - Maine for Lobster

Glad you had a great time and got home safely. I've got to admit, I rode with out a helmet for a short ride into town last weekend while in PA. I felt so "BAD."

    Long weekend trip ideas?

I would cancel this weekends plans for Lake Placid. You can still try to make it later in September. Weather calls for 80-100% chance of rain the whole weekend. Rather than abort your plans completely perhaps you can go in a different direction where the weather is better...

    My Pennsylvania Ride Report

The only time I wished I was on another bike was when I was on a multi-lane hwy. A little more wind protection would have been nice. However the reality of my situation is that my Bandit is all I can afford. I bought it 5 years ago for $4400 and all I've had to do in terms of maintenance is oil...

    My Pennsylvania Ride Report

I guess I missed Wykoff Run. I did however do 555 which I forgot to mention. My schedule was pretty full as it was. I I rode from about 9:30 to 4:30 each day.

    My Pennsylvania Ride Report

I liked the road leading to the grand canyon but the canyon itself was a bit of a let down. Don't get me wrong, but 800 feet of vertical is underwhelming when you've been to Whiteface 3500 ft of vertical, Mt. Washington 4500 ft of vertical. Heck even the look out mountain in Lake George has...

    My Pennsylvania Ride Report

I'm not sure my total kms but I burned just as much gas as my last trip to West Virginia because I circled so much.

    My Pennsylvania Ride Report

Yes I ate at "Yesterdays" in the old hotel in Renovo. The food was only ok and I found the waitress less than friendly. I later found out by a local that their cook left there to open his own place. I'll tell you, PA people are no where near as friendly as West Virginians. I love those people.

    My Pennsylvania Ride Report

While this is my fourth trip through PA, it is my first 4 day dedicated ride there. I was planning to ride to Maine but Hurricane Irene altered my plans. I stayed in Wellsboro on my first night, Coudersport on my second, and Warren on my third. First I'd like to mention motels: I stayed at...

    Long weekend trip ideas?

The most majestic mountain I've seen in the East is Mount Washington at 6,222 ft. It has a vertical rise of over 4500 feet. However its a two day ride. The Adirondacks are a one day ride. Whiteface Mountain is the second nicest peak in the area at 4800 feet, it has 3500 feet of vertical rise...

    Long weekend trip ideas?

It's hard to recommend a destination not knowing where you've already been. However, Pennsylvania, The Adirondacks can be done in three days at a relaxed pace. West Virginia really requires at least 4 full days if you don't want to be rushed. I was in PA last weekend for 4 days. PA is a nice...

    Pennsylvania/W. Virgina trip advice needed.

I only saw deer in the Mononghalia National Forest, but they were numerous. I had three jump out in front of me on 28/33 near Seneca Rocks in June.

Tires tires Tires - what tires are best for touring?

Ted at Rosey Toes will install a set of Shinko 009's on your bike (full installation) for $300. I'm on my second set and I'm happy with them. My last rear tire lasted me 14,000 km. I experimented on my last installation by putting a softer shinko on my front and although it sticks like crazy...

Vermont - POI/LOOK OUT - PLACES TO SEE / RIDE

I suggest you combine a Adirondack/Vermont loop that is easily doable in 3 days. First night Lake George. Then over to Vermont to do a four hour loop. To get there from Lake George, go north on 9N to the Chimney Point Vermont free ferry crossing. Then go north east on 17 to 100. You then go...

    Lake Placid NY

Followed your recommendation last year and found that cascading river you mentioned. Although I didn't go swimming, I enjoyed watching a group of teenagers diving from the cliffs. It's really quite beautiful as the water seems to have Whiteface Mountain as its source.

    Lake Placid NY

I would strongly recommend you include Lake George in your itinerary. I have been to the area many times but I never tire of it because it is so beautiful. I used to stay in Saranac Lake to save money but most of the lodgings there are no longer a bargain. You can stay right in Lake Placid for a...
