Port Dover, Friday March 13th 2015

Exactly. Less crowded, the roads will mostly be clear. But the fish and chips will still be as good. I've been there on the 13th before, just not on a Friday. :-)

Who the hell insures sportbikes anymore?

I pay about $1,100/year for an '03 FZ1 through Duffy and Intact. But then I am an olde fart, with a clean record and live in the hinterland. Also, I have been with Duffy since about 2008.

Port Dover, Friday March 13th 2015

I think I will go to Dover on the 13th, but in June. It should be nicer riding weather. :-)

When are you taking your bikes out?

Not all textile jackets are created equal. My JR Alter Ego is good to about -5C and riding 100kmph. With all the layers attached it probably weighs more than a leather jacket. And it is waterproof, armoured, and warm. Take all the layers off and you are good for 35C riding as well.

Estimating Fuel Usage For Long Trips

Yes, gas is cheaper in the States, but you can't count on $1.10 anywhere else in Canada. Gas is still hovering around a $1/L around here, but I know that Vancouver is paying roughly $1.30/L. When I travel, I never think of the cost of the gas, since that is usually the cheapest part of the trip.

When are you taking your bikes out?

Rode on March 1st, but it was a very short ride. I was dressed for the weather, but I was recovering from a back injury and didn't go far before I couldn't stand the pain from every little bump in the road. Went out last night for about an hour. Rode Hockley valley at sunset. :-) Not much back...

Goose Attack, Now we have Geese to Worry about

I just reread my post. I wrote bird. But I am almost sure that it was a mid-sized female wild turkey. :-) But I have also been hit in the leg by something (racoon/skunk), that the truck that I was passing, just ran over. Last fall, I sort of hit a fair sized racoon but I was only doing about...

Goose Attack, Now we have Geese to Worry about

Out here in the country, I have close calls with critters all the time. I believe that it all depends on where and how you hit them or they hit you and the speeds involved, that will say whether you lose control or not. I hit a bird in flight once. I was doing about 110kmph and it flew across...

Mississauga Road - North of the Belfountain

I was just on Mississauga Road yesterday, north from Belfountain - past the Caledon Ski Club. Going southbound from 24, just before one of the curves going down in the valley there is an f'ing large spill of gravel and mostly sand across the road. It covered the whole southbound lane and part of...

    2014-06-28 Erin Mills Parkway

I was driving down Erin Mills Parkway, yesterday, south from the 401 and the southbound lanes were all closed by the police. I took the detour. A couple of hours later, I was going home northbound on the same road. Turns out that the southbound lanes were closed because of a motorcycle accident...

Question about bad roads with lots of twisties

Going south on Humber Station, if I remember correctly, that really 'good' curve is a slightly decreasing radius with a negative bank. As others have said, take it easy until you know the road better, and can predict the hazards better. And get more familiar with how your bike handles so you...

    Leave this abusive relationship!

Mind you. I may have actually broken the land speed record for a Ural. I once got the bike up to 130kmph. But that was on an interstate coming off the top of a mountain pass with a 30kmph tail wind. :) I've also discovered that the Ural is as aerodynamic as a brick. If you can get in behind a...

    Leave this abusive relationship!

Unless, something has changed, the oil had to be changed every 2,500kms and a rear tire on the bike would only last about 5,000kms. I did a trip to Cape Breton and Gaspe with my son. I changed the oil and put a new rear tire on before we left on the trip. I changed the oil in Sydney, NS in the...

    Leave this abusive relationship!

I owned a Ural gear up for almost 2 years. Put about 29,000kms on it. The bike was cool and could do lots of things that other bikes couldn't. But I got tired of the really crappy gas mileage/range (about 10L/100kms at best) and the fact that it was so slow. the top recommended speed was...

Degree of planning for a long trip

When I tour, I usually research the route but don't pick the hotels. Flexibility is the key. You never know where the Fates may take you. Before I leave the WiFi of the previous hotel, I check the address and availability of hotels where I think that I might end up that night. That way I don't...

Gaspe, Quebec - a few days Between September 7 and September 17

Although, if you have some extra time, the ride through NY, VT, NH and MA is well worth the time spent. I've done this trip a few times. It is a comfortable 3 days from Quebec City, out around Gaspe and back to Quebec City. From my place it is a long slab day to get to Quebec - 900kms. Just...
