What about an SV1000? Used prices are similar to the 650, insurance is similar (if it's not based on the CC's), but lots more power and similar get up and go to an inline 4 - 600 cc. It looks identical to the 650 so no one is going to know what lies 'under the hood.'

First bike CC's is always a hot topic, but I think most would suggest a first bike in the 250-500 range, and even a v-twin 650-800 (just not an inline 6). But a lot of it depends on your height and weight as well. For a larger guy or gal, a 250-300 is underpowered and they would outgrow it...
