We rely on technology for safety all the time -- autopilot, elevators, airbags, and so on. It's completely arbitrary to draw the line at blind spot detection. Sure, it's not necessary, but neither is driving a car to begin with.
No matter what car you're driving, you're trusting that all sorts of technology won't fail -- brakes, steering, airbags, etc. Why is this particular piece of technology any different?

I would not be surprised. Like most government agents, they're crooks. I've had completely illegitimate tickets several times. The most blatant that comes to mind cited a bylaw that says you can't park too close (9M maybe?) to construction or something to that...

Acceleration = force / mass ...so the greater mass will lower acceleration, but it has no impact on top speed.
edit: Well, ignoring friction, but I think the difference is negligible when comparing single rider vs. 2nd up.
Except that any expenditures from riding purely for pleasure have to transferred from the transportation column and moved under entertainment. I haven't "done the math" but it's probably cheaper than, say, going to the movies once you factor in the cost of a ticket (and your date's?), gas...
