Light at the end of the tunnel - Cheaper Motorcycle Insurance July 1st

What blasphemy are you talking about? Freedom? In Ontario?! Think again! Really though, I think with fraud being the biggest contributor to high rates, that the biggest problem with the whole system is our acceptance of those costs being passed to us. Think retail: If Best Buy decided to stop...

Repercussions of changing insured vehicle monthly, or even weekly

I mean, I'm sure my insurer or my broker would not be happy about it, but I'm interested in what they can legally do. As I understand it, dropping or increasing rates are both pretty regulated.

Repercussions of changing insured vehicle monthly, or even weekly

So I have a few bikes, and as any bipedal human, I only ride one at a time. I've asked this question before, and the answer seemed to be that, at least with a frequency of a few times a year, this is not a problem. However, what is the worst that could happen -- could my insurance drop me for...

I just got in an accident

Good luck proving anything. The unfortunate truth in Ontario (and most of North America really) is that you're better off hitting the car that's cutting you off.

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

If I understand that, and looking at a map (looks like that intersection has since been turned into a roundabout?), they were heading straight, filtered past, and went straight through. That's a different case than turning right beside a vehicle waiting to go straight.

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

I've had very few people try to block me intentionally. The diversity of Toronto means that easily 50% of drivers are completely used to lane splitting, and MANY don't even know that it's not standard practice. That cop was a dick though, and fighting that ticket would have been easy, since...

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

Your lane splitter was, as you imply, racing through traffic. That's entirely not the same as a 10-15km/h speed difference. The arguments against lane splitting are as bad as anti-vaxxers completely ignoring studies that prove them entirely wrong. The argument about cars being ****** come down...

    Kawasaki disappointed me :(

Idle adjust is owner-level maintenance; like filling the wiper fluid in your car. Yes it's 'under the hood' but it's there for you, and you should know how to use it if you need. Regardless though, that could just mask the issue. Just take it for warranty and let them look at it. Did they...

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

Stopped traffic doesn't change lanes because *gasp* there's a CAR in the other lane.

    lane splitting

That's not true at all. Unsafe passing, failing to remain in lane, all those exist in California law too. The key is that all charges in both California and Ontario are discretionary, based on outside factors.

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

Really? Why? I've found people not only accepting for the most part, but they even move a lot of the time. Even today, Whitby (where I live) the traffic was unreal -- as in as bad as downtown Toronto gridlock -- because of the 401 overflow going through the entire city. They see me filtering and...

    lane splitting

You can be charged under HTA 172 if the officer decides you're too close to the edge of your lane. You can literally be charged for anything or nothing, solely at the discretion of an officer. Is driving then illegal? Laws exist to define what is illegal, not to define what is legal. The...

    Well, it's gone.

Those were the days, when a 17 year old could get even semi-reasonable insurance. I'm 24, and that bike would run me well over $3000 (the equivalent after inflation).

Need to sell bike in order to buy new one, what to do about insurance?

lapses do not affect insurance, that is a myth (as the practice would be illegal). The only time it affects anything is if you're getting something like accident forgiveness, or not hitting you so hard for a ticket because you were a client before.

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

This wasn't a high speed crash from the victim's perspective. Traffic slows to a downright crawl at the construction zone right now. Filtering speeds would have been 10-20km/h.

    Massive 401 crashes and splitting

Not sure if you guys have heard, but there have been 2 huge crashes on the 401 in Durham these past couple weeks. Neither would have affected a motorcyclist if they had been splitting/filtering, both would have *killed* a rider if they had not been. I don't know about you guys, but I'm thinking...

    lane splitting

Well it actually isn't illegal, but it's also not legal. There are non-specific charges that can be laid, but there is no lane splitting charge.

Seriously, what is up with multiple vehicle rates?

It's not even just motorcycles. A second car would also nearly double my car rate. The bottom line is, I don't drive more because I have more vehicles (except maybe the bike, just because it's fun, in which case, fine, charge me for one bike and one car). And speaking of how much I drive, I...

Seriously, what is up with multiple vehicle rates?

Are you actually saying that my insurance covers the liability of someone that STOLE my car/bike? That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard, and if it's true, is a HUGE flaw in the insurance system.

Seriously, what is up with multiple vehicle rates?

Exactly! I won't drive more with 2 cars (or 2+ bikes in this case) I'll just spread my driving out between the vehicles.
