    2005 R6 Coils Issues - Reistance Tests

Re: 2005 R6 Coils Issues - Resistance Tests When you mentioned that there was some irregularity with the compression test, the next step would be a leak-down test. But if I was a betting man, I would first focus my energies on solving the charging system, before going any further with the...

    2005 R6 Coils Issues - Reistance Tests

Re: 2005 R6 Coils Issues - Resistance Tests While we're at it: Leakdown? Modifications to intake tract? Exhaust? Programming (re-flash, power commander, bazzaz)? Mileage? Clutch age/selection? Gearing changes (sprockets)? Charging system health (if not set up as constant loss)?

    Motorcycle Fix It/Repair Classes...

I have given this some thought over the last little while, and I am considering putting on a couple of workshops. What is it you (and other riders) would like to learn? How long do you want to spend "in class"? There are some good books out there, but this kind of stuff is much easier to absorb...

    2005 R6 Coils Issues - Reistance Tests

Re: 2005 R6 Coils Issues - Resistance Tests No chance. Secondary coils are thousands of ohms... k ohms. The internal resistance will only come into play in very small measurements (primary coils, stator coils, etc.). 2.8 k ohms is 2800 ohms. Subtract your 0.7 ohms and it becomes 2799.3...

    2005 R6 Coils Issues - Reistance Tests

Re: 2005 R6 Coils Issues - Resistance Tests Put meter on lowest range setting (for resistance obviously), and hold the probes together. When the meter settles, write that number down and subtract it from all resistance measurements. Fictional numbers: lets say your meter has 0.7 ohms of...

Re: 2005 R6 Coils Issues - Resistance Tests What's your meter's internal resistance...?

First and last time I'll ever let someone else change my oil

Because your life is worth more to me than 20 minutes of frustration later. I'm not suggesting 100 ft-lbs is the answer, but if the spec is 12 ft-lbs and it gets tightened to 25.. I'm never going to reprimand an apprentice for that. If it leaks on the rear tire while driving down the QEW on the...

Wobble/Shimmy when letting go of handlebars

I have seen this problem on a few bikes. Most notably a customer complained his FJR would "wobble uncontrollably" at 72 km/h, with cruise control activated, when he let go of the bars. I test rode to confirm and I didn't feel it was "uncontrollable" but it was definitely there. I chased the...

New Stator Cover... hard to get off

Be careful when removing the cover, there is a little washer on both sides of the starter idler gear that can fall down and plinko its way someplace you don't want to have to go. Also you are fighting a fairly strong magnet, it may take more force than you expect.

First and last time I'll ever let someone else change my oil

From a technician's perspective: yes most filters are over tightened. Factory installed, me installed... all of them. I have never seen someone use a torque wrench on a filter, and I am quite aware that there is a spec. I have had a heck of a time getting some filters off (including using an air...

Georgetown man dead after motorcycle vs. car collision in Wasaga Beach

Turns out this was my third cousin. Never met him but I know his grandfather (and maybe met his dad at a family function). Only story we got was a collision with a truck in a corner, no info on who was where and in the end it doesn't really matter I guess. I'll pass on all the well wishes to the...

    Oakville Yamaha - great

Thanks for the positive comments, I enjoy getting feedback of any kind but it's especially nice to hear about interactions like this. The young apprentice's name is Jack, and I will pass on your glowing review along with a proper attaboy! Enjoy the bike.

    Dented frame = automatic writeoff?

Replacing the frame can be quite pricey when factoring in the labour required. Ultimately the decision to declare something a total loss will be up to the insurance adjuster. Many adjusters that I have dealt with will respond exactly as described. Their concern is that the repair costs will...

    Yamaha. WTF !!

ABS is coming to all new street bikes, whether you want it or not. Yamaha Canada is aiming to have to entire lineup compliant with the regulations before the deadline. If you want a specific new model with ABS, just wait, it will be available shortly. Generally we are hearing customers when they...

    Any Yamaha FJ 09 owners?

I have an FJ09 as a Demo this year. Previously I have had FJRs and spent quite a bit of time on a Super Tenere last year. As I only ever take the bike(s) on dirt roads once or twice a year, I will leave that discussion to those with much more experience... However, I do spend a lot of time on...

Is Klim gear worth the price?

Klim makes an excellent product, but as with any decision you'll have to decide how much it's worth to you. Both Held and Stadler Pro-shells have Gore-Tex laminated to the outer shell, preventing the water from getting in in the first place. With an inner removable liner, the water will get in...

    Yamaha Service

A home-made work order will be fine. Make sure it has the date, VIN, mileage and the receipts for parts used. Outline the work that was completed and by who. This is more information than I have seen on some professionally made work orders. The photo records are overkill, no shop does this and...

    Yamaha Service

As others mentioned, you do not have to take your bike to an authorized dealer to ensure your warranty remains in place. For some people it is a good idea, for others it isn't. Just make sure if you are doing your services yourself (or at a non-Yamaha shop) you keep good records of what was done...
