  1. conundrum

FYI Traffic sweep focuses on motorcycles and 2 other classes for May

I question if most police officers could even identify things that make a bike not roadworthy, unless it is actually visibly falling apart. Of course, if lights are out that's a different story.

Potential claim question - wondering about impact to rates

I would have thought much more than 10-15% (in some cases a minor ticket costs you that much). My advice would be to call the insurance company and ask, but give them no name or details, and potentially call from an unknown number (not the one you have on file with them), if you are super...

    Oil filter after winter

Typically when I do oil & filter on the bike or car, I add enough oil to bring it up to the max line, start the engine, and run it until the oil pressure light goes out (typically 1-5 seconds). I then either turn it off or let it run maybe 30 seconds more, then stop the engine, and let it sit...

    Oil filter after winter

Not sure I really agree with that one...once the filter media is primed with oil, it should filter as good as it ever will. Once it picks up anything then the flow rate will be lower. That said, I only ever really change my oil either at the mileage interval or once per year (works out to...

Who rides too seldom due to fear of traffic ?

Personally, riding comes with a lot of risk, and for most things, we mitigate as much risk as we can by using good helmets, always wearing gear (ATGATT), rider training, keeping a cool head, etc, etc. To me, one part of keeping risks low is to not put myself in a higher-risk situation, be that...

    For new riders. Recommended

Posted in probably a million threads here, but always worth posting again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pagriJOuH0g

    Theft Fears

That'd be through home insurance/home contents insurance, more than likely. I think in most cases if you can prove things, then you pay around a $1000 deductible and they pay the rest.
  8. conundrum

Anyone recommend a good riding book for short riders?

Any boot that has a thicker sole will also reduce feel on the pegs, which isn't good. If you really want a pair, I know Daytona makes both their MStar and LadyStar boots which essentially have a heel in them. I actually bought a pair years ago when I was worried about not being able to flat...

    Downtown Toronto MeetUps

If you mean 'gather in a parking lot' there is both L&L and Motosocial in the GTA. For any actual riding/group rides though, really you need to get far far far away from the city.
  10. conundrum

    Scrubbing in tires

Technically since we live in Ontario, if you put on new rubber and go for a fun ride up north, you'll easily put 100+ km on the tires before you hit anything fun, so they'll be ready by the time you hit any good roads. lol

    TomTom Winding roads

You can do most of that with a regular Zumo (the 59x series if you want weather)...not sure what the BMW and Harley specific stuff adds, and probably just amounts to a different/more integrated mounting and power system. I just picked up a Zumo 395 at the show -- Was around 40% off all said and...

    Motorcycle Lights requirements

Given the safety concerns, and the fact probably 99% of drivers don't know the hand signals for left and right, I'd put signals back on for safety alone. Other than that, headlight, rear brakelight/taillight and plate light.

Pilot Road 4 on Super Sport

Average lifespan of the PR4s is supposed to be around 15,000-20,000km is it not?
  15. conundrum

Helmets... how long should we keep a helmet?

5-7 is what I've heard. If it has been in a box most of the time, or you only ride weekends (and six months of the year due to winter), then the end of that range is likely still safe, imo. Still debating if I will replace my RF-1100 this year or not...if not this year, definitely next.

Pilot Road 4 on Super Sport

Was sold on the PR4s, but now those Roadtec 01s look good too. Not sure what I'll do, but I'll need new rubber around June.
  17. conundrum

    Northern Roads Conditions v. 2017

Keep in mind with the crap that hit us on Friday April 7th, they were out dumping fresh salt and sand everywhere, especially up north. So any reports of roads that had been washed clean, may no longer be in the same state.
  18. conundrum

    TomTom Winding roads

Most use AGPS, which does ping cell towers, plus unless you buy a GPS app or pre-cache the area, maps are typically pulled down via data as required. Dunno, I typically find a dedicated device can trump a device that tries to do too many things. Not a huge fan of using a phone as a GPS, since...

    507 today?

Sadly that's normally almost pure sand for even longer...I normally don't ride that route until June.

    Echo Safety Helmet Chin Strap

Sidenote, it scares me that people are also wearing helmets loose enough that they can fly off if not done up. With my Shoei, I'd almost need lube if it were any tighter, lol. Still use the strap 100% of the time, or pull over if somehow I forgot. To the OP, really it takes like 10 seconds to...
