So why wouldn't they take the same damn alternate route in this situation? In fact, the lack of notice to the public would ensure the alternate route would actually be less congested. Not trying to justify what they did, just pointing out that the highways being closed for any reason other...

Agree. And if they do want to organise something of this nature next year, (bikes for blinkers, etc) I'd be happy to sign up. That being said, during Ride for hearts or whatever, someones "dying wife" would still be forced to be taken to a hospital on a longer, more congested route, right? And...

Hate to be the devil's advocate here, especially since I'm one of the responsible riders that this directly affects, but don't they block off the gardener for some kind of run for some cure every year?
