We did something like this trip last summer 2-up, happy to share route info etc. Took a US route out and Quebec back, good points about both. Cabot trail alone is well worth the trip.

Also consider a sport-tour. Some are plenty sporty; probably too large a jump from where you are now. Often fairly heavy though.

I really like the 650 vstrom. If I were looking at the 1000, though, I'd also consider the triumph tiger.

Triumph Sprint GT. (not the ST)You'd have to look pretty hard to find better value for money, tours well, fun in the twisties.... And pretty much anywhere else. Well suited to 2up, long hauls, comes with a nice set of waterproof hard bags. The 1050 triple is one he'll of a nice engine, too.

You'll want to give it a few decent taps with a drift punch the same radius as the screw head, first. If it's seized up internally, that will help break bonds on the threads. Once you're talking about cutting new heads, your options are getting slim. Next up is applying heat.

It's not quite as bad as you suggest. There are two issues and it is worth separating them --- resonant frequencies and general vibration (well two sides of the same issue really) If you bars have a strong resonant frequency with the engine (or some harmonic) it is going to be very frequency...

Not familiar with that particular product, but regardless of what you try the benefit is mostly from weight near the bar ends. Soft lead (even fishing weights) can make a big difference...

The base oil wil not break down, but the additives and viscosity mixers will. A year should be fine, more than 3 is probably pushing it. For winter rated oils, this effect is most likely worse the larger the difference between cold and warm viscosity.
