It probably didn't rub on the old pads because they were worn down, which will give it more clearance . New pads mean less gap. If it's really minimal, try shaving the rotors really lightly,that may help. The easy way to check rotors is to lift front end on stands, spin the wheel really slowly...

Re: Griff hard on material I don't think it's a bad image, personally if I'm riding in a group, I want it to be with motorcycles only and no car additions. I'd confront a Dick if they are being one. Mostly because I don't want to be hit by a car and there are so many bad drivers out there...
