I'll second what somebody else said about the old Bandit 1200's. They were great, and bulletproof.
Not that I'm biased, but I think my bike is a pretty good sleeper. 2014 Kawasaki Concours 1400. It's basically a ZX14 thats had a few too many buffet dinners but it still screams, and with full...
Check this out...nice looking bike, good ergos, it will be cheap on insurance too (compared to a GSXR for sure)

At that price you could easily get some bags and stuff for it too and stay...
i4's are generally better on mileage, but it depends on the bike. I don't think you'll find a huge difference in mileage between any of those bikes. For not much more than that you could probably find an older FJR1300 that would be a great bike. Or Honda ST1300 but they're harder to find.
Also...
I wouldn't call the Concours a "dinosaur" as it's still one of the most capable sport touring bikes out there. C14's and FJR's can also be found used for bargain prices in comparison to the newer adventure/sport/touring bikes. The 1000 XR is only marginally quicker than the Concours.....plus...

Just gotta change the exhaust to a V&H CS One because the stock muffler is fugly
None of the above and look more at sport tourers like Concours 1400 or FJR 1300. The ergos on a supersport of going to kill you with that. I commute 100 km each way to work (Brantford to Mississauga) on my Concours and it's awesome. Also only a marginal performance difference between the bikes...
I've been thinking more and more about this and I want to take a course. I found a few that look good, but wonder if anyone has experience with any of these courses:

I went for the first time in almost 20 years and had fun. So many bikes! Yeah, ratio is probably 95% to 5% pirates vs ninjas, but everyone was cool. I was surprised to see so many H*lls Angels though. Weird to see that stuff. Some very cool bikes of all types as well as some classics with...
Pilot Road 4 GT's are great, but you can get Bridgestone T30 GT's for cheaper and they're fantastic too. I run them on my Concours 1400 (which eats tires like the FJR's)
The headlights on my Concours 1400 are brighter than my Honda Accord. The high beams are better too. I drive with my high beam during the day - city and highway. I probably don't need to because they're so bright anyway, but it's habit from years of riding bikes with crap headlights.
Pretty happy with Bridgestone T30 GT's on my Concours 1400. It eats tires just like the FJR. 5000 km in wiht no signs of wear and great handling overall. I went to a 55 series rear instead of the 50 and it made a huge difference to tipping in on turns. Very happy and will get another set when...
