In theory getting the tires off ground on jack is good...if you only have stands with tires on ground once a month move the tire position so that flat spots don't develope. I like to jack my bikes off the ground for price of mind...look on Kijiji for a deal on a good floor jack or look for can...
No one mentioned the XR? My xr400r keeps up to any modern mx bike in the woods single track....change oil and let it rip...great reliable machine for the weekend warrior!....plus its kinda funny seeing the old tank tow a $10 grand + ktm out of the woods cause it got its cheesy flimsy rad busted...
Things to consider...type of bike, rider skill and gear...I wouldn't be putting my foot down on a harley for example with regular boots..but on a supermoto with proper gear it's another storey all together...the above picture by superseven explains it all...

Re: Dirtbike Trail Riding - Georgetown and Simcoe area
Join SCORRA. Everything is there for you. Best tracts for lil guys is Baxter. It's close wide and Sandy for soft landings. Decent lil single tract if you want to get technical...
Depends on the kid...I used trainers on my first at 4 after and after an hr they came off...kids learn so fast...some need them some don't...if they do, use it as the ice breaker
