2023 Ural Gear Up

Ural tinkering. It was handling fine with the sidecar suspension adjusted to max, but i would like it to be softer for my lovely passenger. So i changed the length of the struts and lowered the sidecar."Leanout" is now set at 3.5deg from 2.0deg. Huge difference. Very happy.

Coming up to 4500km. Still fighting a slight pull to the right,so i opened the toolbox and made a couple of adjustments. Used a ratchet strap to pull the front of the sidecar in about 2mm. Test ride and it was a bit better. Used a scissor jack at the rear to push it out about 3mm. More toe-in. Test ride, Holy crap, what a difference! Zero effort at the handlebars at 60/70 kph now.
Handles like a motorcycle with zero trail now. Lol.

There is so much to learn owning a sidecar rig. I thought i knew a lot about chassis tuning, but none of it applies anymore. I've made changes to lean out that helped a little with the pull to the right. But the biggest change came from adjusting the toe in. There are so many variables. Preload, tire pressure have big effects. The biggest variable is one that can't be changed. The crown in the road.

What happens if you get the car way too high (in a mostly straight line)? Does it lay on its side or does it try to go turtle?
Same as a wheelie. Twelve o'clock, tap the brake, back to safety.
Hard right, lift the car too high, i dunno. I'll let you know. It's probably easier to recover than a wheelie because you are still on 2 wheels.

Edit: countersteering needs to be unlearned. I instinctively tried to avoid a little groundhog last week by countersteering. Nailed him.

Ural has stopped production of the flagship GearUp model. There are some at dealers, but they will be snapped up fast.
