Speed cameras to start automatically ticketing on July 6

Speeding in a school zone? I have no issue with you getting a ticket. People say this is nothing other than a revenue generation issue and is not a real deterant. I don't agree with this at all, how many tickets is a person going to receive before they slow down. You'd have to be an idiot to receive say, 10 tickets, and conclude "screw it, Im going to continue to do 75 kph in school zones". But just to cover all the bases, I'd say after the 1st month and after an owner would have received any initial tickets that have to be paid that if a vehicle collects more thean 10 tickets seize the plates for a period of 7 days. Again, the bylaws have to have teeth.

Needless to say, Toronto again scores zero on a common sense issue in that the new program goes into effect after the end of the school year, covid aside.

As much as I think it will help, it's worrying in the sense of money generation for insurance.
Going 42 in the 40 zone, get $10 and +$130 "victim charge" ticket paid to the city.
Then your insurance goes up $200/year for 5 years for having a single ticket. No more clean record, cuz you went 2kph over the limit at the wrong time.

Then don't. Go 38 or 35. All the time !

It's not a moving violation (insurance reported), they can't prove who was riding.

Consider it a 'check yourself' ticket, like one's for plates in the wrong place, failing to carry your ID/insurance on you, illegal lighting on the bike, etc.

I don’t think the ticket will go on your record, as they can’t determine who’s driving... that’s why there’s also no demerit points taken off your driver license. But I could be wrong..

Nailed it, if it doesn't affect your license insurance will never know!

I’m curious how the speeding traps works themselves. I’ve seen those big board that tell you how fast you are going. Does that measure how fast you are coming toward that sign or does it measure the speed from a different device and show that speed up ahead? I would imagine if the take a picture of you coming towards the camera instead of away that it won’t catch the license plates cuz the plate are at the back of the bike. If they had it moving away then that billboard sign would show incorrect data because by the time you see your speed you are not at that speed anymore. Am I correct in thinking this way or are these traps more cleverer than that? I know this would be hard to fight in court but I’m just curious how these traps work so we can be safe out there

Photo radar is a cash grab. Always has been. There is no deterrent involved.

Post the areas that it is in plainly as you enter them and then we can have a discussion.

* I feel the same way about the radar stations posted at the bottom of hills and just before the exists/entrances to towns where the limit changes.

Yes it is a cash grab...

Trust me it can be a deterrent for many. Back in the dark days when we had photo radar van's in random locations, people slowed down. I also remember the day it was repealed and the speed of traffic jumped 20km/h on the 401.

Not so sure about the impact on speeds with fixed location speed cams. Drivers who know the locations would slow down. There is a fixed amount speed cam on Highway 20 in Pincourt on the outskirts of Montreal. It is marked with signs. Most folks slow down in that stretch. Then speed up after.

Its not a cash grab, parking a photo cam costs WAY less than parking a police cruiser on location, and if people did not continuosly spped through school zones, we wouldn't have cameras.

Dont think for a moment this will not eventually affect your insurance, your the registered owner of a vehicle that is being operated unsafely, collect enough tickets and you'll see a result, it wont be you the "driver" being declined, it will be the registered owner of the offending vehicle. Obligaion to insure your vehicle is being operated safely . Not law you say? not this week.....coming to an insuarnce office near you soon.....

Our traffic and speed infraction laws are broken. Routine traffic flow on the 407 is 125 - 135 during rush hour, but just 15 kph more (150 or 50 over) gets your vehicle seized because it's so dangerous..... makes no sense. Now, 90 (50 over) in a 40 school zone is, relatively speaking, very fast but I see people doing this all of the time.

I live in one of those new Mississauga residential zones where the speed limit has been reduced to from 50 to 40 everywhere, not just in school zones.
This was done to reduce the severeity of injuries to pedestrians in the event of a collision. So far, IMHO, this has had zero impact on the people who routinely bomb around at 80 or 90 as there is zero enforcement. I'd be fine with a few unmarked cameras set up with a 50 threshold. After 4 or 5 tickets maybe the idiots would slow down.

Cameras have been set up in other cities for decades, so it's not as if this is cutting edge. There's lots of evidence that it does slow traffic down.

Is the victim surcharge the same no matter what the actual fine is? $130 surcharge on a $10 ticket is outrageous. And I've always wondered who the 'victim' is that's receiving these payments. Also, will the cameras have a margin of error built into them so that you don't get a ticket until you're doing at least 3km/h over the limit (speedo off, or wrong size tires).

I have no real problem with cameras if they are used as an accessory measure rather than a primary measure to prevent accidents. If you want kids to stay safe, TEACH THEM HOW TO CROSS A ROAD! And ban on street parking in the school zones. It doesn't matter if you're doing 35 or 45 if a kids runs out from behind a parked car at the last second.

Also, set limits accordingly. I understand this is in school zones and not 400 series, but 100km/h on a 400 series is not safe, it's a lullaby. The speed limit was higher in the late 60's when cars were a piece of crap. Then the limit was 70mph when cars were still on the road with 4 wheel drum brakes. At 70 you were white knuckling it. If the limit isn't at the 78th percentile then it's too low and just a cash grab.

The one near here is on a main drag that should be a 60 zone. It's a 40 for way too long. The school is a Catholic High school, with a stop sign at one end of the school and a traffic light at the other, so there isn't any jaywalking. The one elementary school, is on a parallel street that doesn't get a camera. The other elementary school is a few blocks away, on a quiet curvy street, and I'm not sure if they have sidewalks everywhere, they had stopped putting them in at one point; no photo radar there either. Public High school is in a 60 zone, with a traffic light at one end, but nothing at the other, it also doesn't get a camera. They've had a couple of students hit jaywalking, as far as I know.

TLDR: Camera placement makes no sense at all.

I have twice gotten tickets for not carrying my insurance card and had it affect my insurance.

First time was with Johnson Insurance 14 years ago. I was told to find a new high risk provider before they drop me (record had missing ins card + 2 tickets for 15 over)

Second time was just recently. Currently with TD and they gave me a terrible quote for my second bike. Called riders choice and they said they would not quote due to have 3 infractions (no ins slip again, 15 over, 30 over)
