How to register FOUND motorcycle

Hey one and all,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, so please redirect me if it's not. General discussion seemed safe enough.

The story is, I have rental property and two previous tenants (they rented it together) have moved back to HK and left their bikes behind. I can't get in touch with them and don't want the bikes laying around any longer. One was last licensed in 2014 the other in 2017.

One is a Kawasaki the other a Yamaha R3-320 based on what I can tell by looking at them. Not an expert here it goes without saying.

What can I do to get rid of them? I have called tow trucks who refuse to touch them due to no insurance on them and unclear or untraceable ownership.

The police say as it's private property it has nothing to do with them.

Is there a way to register these bikes and just sell them? If so what might that process be?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Would be tempted to run their VIN through DMV,
but if you don't want to be involved and just want them gone, somebody here will probably want them.

For the sake of argument.. and the fact it's accurate let's pretend I'm a moron when it comes to bikes :) Where would I find a VIN on them?

How would I "run their VIN through DMV"

A friend tells me the Yamaha has some value, so if its not a ton of work I wouldn't mind looking into a little further.

Ask at service ontario (or many as they all give different answers but ultimately they will probably be the ones processing the transaction). There may not be an easy path for you to get money for them. Assuming your lease had nothing about storage charges or cleanup fees, it may be an uphill battle to create a retroactive contract.

If you dumped them somewhere, a tow company would pick them up, charge storage and then sell them but I'm not sure you can do that as a landlord.

VIN is stamped on the frame near where the steering part is,
17 character alpha numeric

... if they were abandoned on your property nobody has a better right to claim ownership, assuming they were not previously stolen.

Even if they are completely trashed they are worth money at a scrap yard.

On the steering stem (below the handlebars, above the front wheel.

You can buy a UVIP for $20 from Service Ontario which tells you the owner and if there are any liens. If there are liens on the bike, just call the lienholder and tell them to come and get their property.

Thank you, 100% not stolen, they were two students from Hong Kong here going to school. Mommy and Daddy bought them the bikes to get around. They paid the rent a year in advance up front and quite sure the Bike's are free and clear.

You really should get them registered as unfit in your name if possible :/ they are worth money.

That is what I am told by others, but those people know as little about bikes as I do, hence coming here to the place where people do know stuff. I will head down the path with the info you guys have so generously provided and see what comes of it.

Thanks very much.

You know what just jumped into my head, what the heck would I do about keys? They are going to need keys at some point, how does one go about fixing that issue?

One of the front tires is locked so it can't turn I assume until the keys are inserted.

Once you own the bikes, a locksmith can either make you keys or replace the cylinders and give you keys. To avoid "stealing" the bikes, I wouldn't start modifying the bikes until you own them (also, I wouldn't invest any money in them until they are in your name as the depths of government stupidity know no bounds).

Personally, I'd part them out if you have no interest in riding it yourself.

If they are taking up space and you absolutely need them gone, simply drop them off in a fire zone somewhere or use them to double park someone you don't like at work.

Good call, makes perfect sense.

Honestly my only hope is to get rid of them, if I can do so by putting them in my name and making a few bucks, that's great so I don't mind putting a little money for searches, etc... but yeah I won't go too far down any rabbit holes.

Literally did a spit take on that one, only because its so god damn true...

Probably not the right approach, this is for scrap cars stored on private property.

You probably want to register a storage lien on the bikes. In a nutshell you have to follow the Repair and Storage Liens Act (RLSA)

You can assess storage costs at FMV which would be about $200/mo (storage locker). Most bailiffs are familiar with storage liens, they should be able to direct you to the right person. Try these guys -- for $195 each they'll get you titles, from there you sell the bikes. Bailiff Services Ownerships abandoned vehicles, transfers Vehicle Titles Ownerships Ontario

Or PM me - I'll pick up the bikes and give you a quick thousand for the pair if you sign over the storage lien.:poop:

I think you should maybe just hot wire it and learn to ride that Yamaha in your building parking lot
;) that's a pretty nice little bike.

MadMike is right.
First you send a letter to the owner at the last known address telling them they have X number of days to get their property out of there, or you will start charging storage.
After 90 days of charging them storage, send another letter demanding payment or you will sell their property.
If they don't respond you can then sell their property at a PUBIC auction to recoup your storage bill.
NO you can't register someone else's property in your name.

... or you could part them out

Do they have to be registered letters? I am assuming the last known address is owned by the landlord so he's basically sending letters to himself (or she/herself).
