I have a relatively new set of Pilot Road 2 rubber (with lots of tread left) and was hoping to get the bike on the track a couple of time this season. I came from a set of Pirelli Diablo Rosso II's and I can feel that the PR2's aren't nearly as soft/grippy as the old Pirelli's on my previous bike.

I don't expect to push the bike too hard since this would be only the first couple of times on the track on bike.. and would wait till I take Racer5 or FAST next year before pushing too hard.

Looking for opinions on how well this rubber will perform on a track day.. or if it's something I should avoid.

I think you should be ok using them especially if you're just starting out, personally I would ride out to Competition Cycle and get a set of scrubs. I just bought a set of Pirelli Supercorsa's for $80.

Thanks Paul,

I know it's a touring tire with excellent mileage but I'm more worried about working temperature. In my experience, the tires are very loose when they're cold and take quite some time to heat up... so I don't really want to loose my entire session trying to warm the tire up.

Is it worth it to just get a set of slicks or scrubs or should a few "light" sessions this year be okay? I'm not there to set lap times but I would still like to have some fun without having to nanny the rear coming out of every single turn.

I always get the best tires i can afford. Beats road rash every time

But wtf do i know? Im just a post whore :lmao:

Don't bother with slicks unless you have warmers. You could probably get away with a DOT track tire and no warmers but a sticky street tire would be best.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh Paul...

I definitely know the importance of good tires. Once these run out I'll be getting a set of the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II's.. but I'm a pretty broke guy right now and can't swing it! Mine are 2CT so hopefully they'll hold up for a light track day or two this year and hopefully next season I can either order a set of scrubs + the PDR2s for the street or perhaps just track the PR2's as well. I know it's not ideal and I won't be having as much fun as possible but it'll be a start.

You will be fine on these tires. You'l have a harder time warming up slicks than street tires since street tires are softer compounds. No point getting slicks and spending the money to take them on an off everytime you go to the track. Waste of $$

And then spend more money to remove them and put them on every track day??????

Personally, I would put on some scrubs and sell the street tires. Then use the scrubs for street and track. Problem solved.

I did 5 laps with them at mosport (the training track).

It was my first track experience and they held up fine, was even passing people. Wouldn't recommend them for the serious track rider but for your first few times, worry about the track lines and braking/acceleration points.

5 whole laps. And they held up fine. LOL.

PR2 will be fine for a trackday. You could run green/yellow pace with them without issue. Make sure you get the pressure correct.

Not a big fan of scrubs. You're running a tire someone else has already discarded for lack of edge grip.

Not good scrubs, and if your just starting out there will be more than enough edge grip but the more worn sets will have less drive out of the corners. Depending on the price/condition of the scrubs it can be a more affordable way to have an actual track based tire.

I'm not trying to convince you to buy scrubs but keep other people from being scared off of running them.

Just be careful not to overheat them. I've heard stories of people taking touring tires to the track and basically destroying them in the process - they acquire a permanently greasy feeling.
